The top-of-the-line Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution trim is the MR. The Evo MR features an exclusive 6-speed transmission, upgraded shocks, lightweight forged BBS wheels, and creature comforts not found on the lower trim levels. Early generations of the MR feature vortex generators on the roof to help improve aerodynamics, but they are absent from the tenth-generation. While the MR didn’t make any additional power compared to the RS or GSR, it offers improved handling and was extensively tested on Nürburgring.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X MR (10th Generation: 2008 - 2015)

Key Improvements: Depending on who you ask, the TC-SST (Twin-Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission) is a highlight or a lowlight of the tenth-generation Evo MR. The quicker shifts and making the Evo more accessible to drivers who can’t drive a manual transmission are certainly positive improvements. Another notable change is the switch to the 4B11 from the 4G63T engine, which has a cult following among car enthusiasts. The key differences between the engines are that the 4B11 uses an aluminum block instead of iron, and the turbo is located in the rear instead of the front.

Across the board, <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution?endYear=2015&amp;startYear=2008">Evo X</a> models benefit from improved safety and chassis stability. The chassis upgrades are possible due to what Mitsubishi calls RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution). RISE incorporates high-tensile steel, which wasn’t present in the previous Evo MR generations. Aluminum was extensively used for body panels and suspension components to help keep vehicle weight in check. The Evo MR VIII and IX have an aluminum roof, and the Evo MR X has an aluminum roof, hood, and front fenders.

Model Updates: The 2008 Lancer Evolution X had an issue with timing chain stretch that was resolved when the 2010 model arrived. Mitsubishi didn’t sell a 2009 Evo X because a surplus of 2008 models still needed to be sold. During 2010, an MR Touring trim was available, which was essentially an MR with leather seats, a sunroof, and extra sound deadening.


Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR (9th Generation: 2006)

Key Improvements: The second version of the Lancer Evolution MR benefits from a slight bump in power due to being equipped with MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing). Horsepower increased from 276 to 286, and torque increased from 286 lb-ft to 289 lb-ft. While 10 horsepower might not be a significant gain, the real improvement comes from a broader powerband that makes more power available across the RPM range.

Slight styling changes occur inside and out across the ninth-generation Lancer Evolution lineup. A redesigned front bumper, rear bumper, and darker headlights highlight the exterior changes. The interior features revised Recaro bucket seats with Alcantara inserts and leather bolsters to make getting in and out of the Evo a little easier.

The Lancer Evolution VIII MR was only available for one year, making it one of the most sought-after models of this generation. The BBS wheels weigh nearly 3 pounds less than the standard Enkei wheels, which improve all-around performance by reducing unsprung and rotational mass. The total weight savings on the MR compared to the base model Lancer Evolution is 27.6 pounds.

The limited-slip front and active center differential are some of the most significant performance benefits of the Evo VIII MR over the earlier Evo VIII GSR models (2003 - 2004). The ACD lets drivers choose three modes that maximize performance on different surfaces (tarmac, gravel, and snow). The advanced differentials became available on the <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/rs">Evo RS</a> in 2004 and were standard on all models in 2005.

The interior of the <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution?endYear=2005&amp;startYear=2003">Evo VIII</a> MR receives a few upgrades in the form of an aluminum shift knob, aluminum/carbon fiber emergency brake lever, and aluminum pedals.
