The big news for the returning 2022 Mazda CX-30 is standard all-wheel drive (AWD) on all grades. If that causes you to see dollar signs, calm down. This move is barely raising the price bar – at least on the base trim level.
Last year’s front-wheel-drive (FWD) entry-level 2.5 S carried a suggested retail price of $22,050. Opting for AWD, tacked on another $1,400, totaling $23,450.
For 2022, with AWD standard, the 2.5 S base price is $22,200. In other words, for 2022 the base CX-30 with standard AWD is $1,250 less than the 2021 base trim with optional AWD. Moreover, it means you are only paying $150 for standard AWD on the base 2022 CX-30. A pretty good deal, we say.
Prices are up more on the other trim levels but nothing close to the $1,400 upcharge for optional AWD in 2021.
A sophisticated AWD system, CX-30’s i-Activ AWD can shift engine torque to any wheel, achieving maximum grip and stability.
The CX-30 occupies the space between the CX-3 and CX-5. Among its primary rivals are the Hyundai Kona, Chevy Trax, Nissan Kicks, and others.
We like CX-30 for its upscale exterior styling, athletic handling, quiet cabin, well-crafted interior, and standard AWD. Oh, and its competitive pricing.
If you were among the few thinking last year’s seven trim levels weren’t enough, there’s good news. Mazda adds an eighth trim for 2022. It’s basically the 2.5 S Preferred grade gussied up with an exclusive exterior-interior color scheme and black wheels. Mazda calls it Carbon Edition.
The official list of 2022 trim levels: 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Premium, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.
Mazda offers two engines for the CX-30. Those with “2.5” in their nameplate source power from a 186-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine.
No matter the engine, a 6-speed automatic transmission hustles engine output to all four wheels.
Those grades with “Turbo” in their nameplate pack a 227-hp 2.5-liter turbocharged engine.
EPA fuel economy for the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter CX-30 is 24 miles per gallon in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg in combined driving. Moving up to the turbo scrubs those numbers down to 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined.
2022 Mazda CX-30 2.5 S (starting at $22,200)
The 2022 Mazda CX-30 2.5 S starts at $22,200.
Standard equipment includes AWD, 16-inch alloy wheels, and LED exterior lights (auto on-off headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights).
Also included are rain-sensing wipers, Mazda Connected Services, cloth seating, and air conditioning.
A 7-inch LCD driver-information display and remote keyless entry with push-button start. are also standard.
Within the infotainment system are an 8.8-inch touchscreen, an 8-speaker audio system, and two USB ports.
Wi-Fi hotspot capability, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are also standard.
Among the driver aids are forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam assist. Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist are also standard.
You can add sport pedals for $250 and wireless charging for $275. An auto-dimming rearview mirror and a Homelink transceiver will set you back $375.

2022 Mazda CX-30 2.5 S includes:
- AWD – This is a full-time system capable of moving engine torque from axle to axle and across axles for maximum grip and stability.
- LED exterior lighting – This includes headlights with auto on-off, taillights, and daytime running lights (DRLs). LEDs illuminate a wider and longer area than regular incandescent lights. That means they are also easier for other drivers to see.
- Driver Aids – They include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
2022 Mazda CX-30 2.5 S Select (starting at $24,600)
The 2.5 S Select adds 18-inch alloy wheels, outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, and aluminum roof rails.
Black faux-leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry, and dual-zone automatic climate control are also standard.
Bluetooth connectivity and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert are included.
In addition to the 2.5 S options, you can add a navigation system ($450).

- Dual-zone automatic climate control – A set-it-and-forget-it system, it divides the vehicle into left and right regions. It provides separate temperature settings for each region. Once set, it automatically maintains the preset temperatures.
- Blind-spot monitoring – This radar-based system warns of traffic approaching your flanks. It also includes rear cross-traffic alert to warn of vehicles crossing behind you when in reverse.
- Keyless entry – If the key fob is on your person, the doors automatically unlock when you touch the door handle.
2022 Mazda CX-30 2.5 S Preferred (starting at $27,650)
To the Select, the Preferred adds heated front seats, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a power moonroof.
Memory for the driver’s seat and outboard mirrors, as well as an outboard mirror tilt-down-in-reverse feature, are also standard.
All Select options are also options for Preferred.

To the 2.5 S Preferred features, Premium adds adaptive front lights, leather seats, navigation, paddle shifters, and a power rear liftgate.
Also included are an active driving display, road-sign recognition, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and satellite radio capability.
A SiriusXM Traffic & Travel Link subscription is also included with current traffic, weather, nearby parking, and other features.
Premium loses the $450 navigation option because it is standard, but all other Preferred options are available.

2022 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo includes:

- Auto-dimming rearview mirror – Using photosensors, it recognizes bright headlights closing from behind. It then automatically dims the reflection of those lights.
