Before you start your ad, have a few pieces of information handy.

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or License Plate Number and State

Enter either your car’s VIN or license plate number and state of issue, and Autotrader can access most of the information needed to list your car for sale, including year, make, model, and equipment as it left the factory.

The VIN is located on the driver’s side of the dashboard by the window and on the driver’s side doorjamb. It’s also listed on your auto insurance card and state vehicle registration form.

A List of Standard and Optional Equipment

Though the VIN or license plate reveals a list of equipment, it’s not always perfectly accurate, and it can’t account for modifications made to the car after it leaves the factory. It doesn’t hurt to double-check the automated information with your equipment list. You’ll need to add any upgrades that will stay with the car, like an aftermarket navigation system, backup camera, roof rack, or other enhancements.

If you’re not sure which equipment you have on your car, a simple visual inspection will usually give you enough information for your ad.

Photos (Optional)

Photos give buyers their first impression of your car and often help them decide to take a test drive. Ads with images typically get twice the response of ads without. The maximum photo size you can upload to your Autotrader ad is 10 MB.

You can add a single photo or up to 30. Having your photos ready before you start your ad will speed up ad creation.
