2019 Honda Civic: Choosing the Right Trim

The Honda Civic has long been a favorite among car buyers. Its numerous trims range from economical compacts to premium-feeling sedans. Two performance models, the Si and Type R, fill the dreams of driving enthusiasts.

The 2019 Honda Civic comes in several body styles, another rarity these days. And whether you choose a coupe, sedan, or hatchback, you won’t be penalized with downgraded options or engine choices. As the 2019 Civic isn’t all that different from the 2020 model, you can save some money going one year older and not feel like you’re missing out.

We think most people will find one of the more popular trims, like the LX or Sport, delivers everything they need and expect from a Honda, including the latest safety features, a fuel-efficient yet peppy engine, and styling that is anything but bland. The only reason to move up to a more expensive trim is for features like a premium audio system, navigation, and leather seats.

2019 Honda Civic LX (Sedan, Coupe, and Hatchback)

The LX is the most basic Civic trim, but that doesn’t mean it’s spartan. For most economy car buyers, a used 2019 Civic LX, be it a coupe, sedan, or hatchback, is more than enough car.

Standard on the sedan is a 158-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The Civic LX coupe uses the same engine but with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), while the hatchback gets a more powerful 174-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and the CVT.

The LX comes equipped with 2-speed intermittent wipers, auto on/off headlights, power mirrors, and 16-inch wheels with full covers.

Comfort and convenience features include automatic climate control, one-touch up/down front power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, and a tilt and telescopic steering wheel. Little things often overlooked but nice to have when you need them include sliding sun visors, a sliding center console armrest, electric trunk release, and rear-seat heat ducts.

The LX’s cloth seats stay cool in the summer and are a nice departure from the trend toward synthetic leather on base cars. A 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat is also standard.

On the infotainment front, the LX’s system is basic but complete. It includes a 5-inch color display, Bluetooth phone and music streaming connectivity, and a 160-watt amp hooked to four speakers. The color display also serves duty as the view screen for the rearview camera. There is one 12-volt outlet and one USB charge port located in the center console.

The Civic LX’s safety features include a full complement of airbags, electronic traction and stability control, and anti-lock brakes. The Honda Sensing suite of driver aids is also standard. It includes forward-collision warning, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights.

Both the coupe and hatchback upgrade to 16-inch wheels and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat.

We see elevated used car prices across the board with current market conditions, including the Honda Civic. However, prices are beginning to level off and even come down in some instances.

Ordinarily, a used 2019 Honda Civic LX sedan with low mileage and in good condition would sell for a few thousand below its original MSRP. However, a look at the Autotrader classifieds shows low-mileage LX models selling between $18,000 and $21,500, depending on mileage. Private party sales tend to be a bit lower.

Clearly, region and demand will dictate price, so be sure to shop around in and outside your area. If prices are high where you live, and you’re willing to pay them, we suggest going with a certified pre-owned (CPO) Civic.

CPO vehicles cost more than private party sales. Still, unlike a marked-up Civic on a used car lot, a CPO Civic sold through a Honda dealer includes a full inspection and extended time and mileage added to the factory warranty. See 2019 Honda Civic LX models for sale

2019 Honda Civic LX Includes:

  • Automatic emergency braking – In low-speed situations, this system can automatically slow or stop the vehicle, helping avoid a collision.
  • Tilt and telescopic steering wheel – Adjusts up and down, fore and aft, to help the driver find a comfortable position.
  • Adaptive cruise control – Allows the driver to set a fixed distance from the traffic ahead when the cruise control is engaged. CVT-equipped cars include low-speed follow that enables the Civic to slow, stop, and then resume speed.
  • Automatic high-beam headlights – Automatically illuminate when dark, reverting to low beams when sensing oncoming traffic at night.

2019 Honda Civic Sport (Sedan, Coupe, and Hatchback)

The Sport shares the LX’s engine and transmission choices, only on the coupe and hatchback. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard. The available CVT includes steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Building from the LX’s standard features, the Sport trim gains fog lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, a center-mounted exhaust pipe, a gloss black rear spoiler, and Honda’s Smart Entry proximity key fob that allows automatic door unlocking and engine starting via a push button on the dash.

Also in the Sport’s roster of goodies are a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, sport pedals, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment setup with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Buyers should note that SiriusXM satellite radio is not available until you move to the EX trim.

The Sport’s audio gets upgraded to a 180-watt amp with eight speakers, and an additional 1.5-amp USB smartphone/audio interface gets added to the console.

The rearview monitor gains dynamic guidelines that bend as the car turns.

Typically, a reasonable private party sale price for a 2019 Honda Civic Sport sedan in good condition and with low mileage would run in the $17,000 to $19,000 range. A dealer transaction would be a bit more.

However, due to the shortage in new car sales, we see wide fluctuations in used Civic Sport pricing. A look at the Autotrader classified page shows pricing on dealer lots ranging from a low of $19,500 to as much as $29,000 for a certified pre-owned (CPO) Sport hatchback.

In this market, it’s best to shop around, even if it’s a few hundred miles outside your comfort zone. Also, be aware that a low price well below market value may signify a car with a rebuilt salvage title. That’s a car that is deemed totaled by an insurance company but repaired and returned to service. Depending on the work, a salvage title car might be a good way to save money, although many insurance companies won’t fully insure it. If they do, it will only be for limited collision coverage. 2019 Honda Civic Sport Includes:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels – Look great, and the added width means more rubber to connect to the road, while a lower side profile improves cornering.
  • 6-speed manual transmission – For many, having a manual is the difference between driving a car and just steering it. The Sport’s 6-speed is a joy. Impressively, even manual models come with the Honda Sensing suite.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – Allow smartphone integration into the car’s infotainment system, giving full access to voice commands, apps, music, and messages.
  • Smart Entry – Requires only that you have the key fob with you to unlock the doors and start the car with the push of a button.

2019 Honda Civic EX (Sedan, Coupe, and Hatchback)

The EX trim is probably the best value in the Civic lineup, bring all the safety and security of the LX, with more creature comforts and upgrades, like SiriusXM radio.

Of course, the most notable upgrade is the 174-hp, 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, and a CVT automatic transmission.

On the driver safety front, the EX gains Honda’s LaneWatch passenger-side blind-spot monitor. Other standard features include heated side mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, illuminated visor vanity mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rear-seat armrest, heated front seats, and an 8-way power driver’s seat (sedan only).

A power glass moonroof and variable intermittent wipers complete the EX package.

The Civic EX Coupe gains a 10-speaker, 450-watt premium audio system.

Typically, in a regular market, a used 2019 Honda Civic EX in good to excellent condition and with less than 25,000 miles might reasonably sell for around $20,000 from a private party and $22,500 from a dealer with a warranty.

Unfortunately, current conditions limiting the number of new cars available have pushed up used car pricing, sometimes well above what the Civic EX cost new. Currently, a look through the Autotrader classified reveals 2019 Civic EX sedan prices ranging from $18,800 for a Certified Pre-Owned EX to $29,000 for a standard sale with no warranty. That’s a pretty wide gap, with variations primarily due to location and area demand.

To make your best deal, try shopping around outside your area. You may find it worthwhile to drive a day or even fly to another city if it means saving thousands of dollars. See 2019 Honda Civic EX models for sale

2019 Honda Civic EX Includes:

  • 1.5-liter turbocharged engine – With more power for passing and acceleration, the turbo still gets outstanding fuel economy.
  • 8-way power driver’s seat – Allows better positioning of the driver’s seat for a more comfortable ride.
  • Power moonroof – Allows light into the cabin when in the closed position and fresh air when wide open. The moonroof also includes a vent feature for when you need a bit more airflow.
  • LaneWatch – Using a camera in the passenger-side mirror, the LaneWatch system turns on when the turn signal is activated. The system displays an image on the infotainment screen showing if a vehicle is driving in the Civic’s blind spot.

2019 Honda Civic EX-L (Sedan, Coupe, and Hatchback)

The EX-L is nearly identical to the EX, adding leather seats, the HomeLink universal garage remote, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Navigation and an 8-way power driver’s seat are part of the standard equipment list on the EX-L hatchback.

The same pricing situation applies to the EX-L as the EX, only expect to pay about another $1,000 to $1,500. See 2019 Honda Civic EX-L models for sale

2019 Honda Civic Touring (Sedan and Coupe)

The Touring trim is the top model in the Civic lineup, although mysteriously, the Touring coupe still gets a manually adjustable driver’s seat. Other than that, the sedan and coupe are pretty much in unison.

In addition to the EX-L’s standard features, the Touring brings 18-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, LED headlights, chrome door handles, rain-sensing wipers, and a 450-watt, 10-speaker audio system with integrated satellite navigation. A 4-way power passenger seat and heated rear seats are standard, but only on the sedan.

As with the other trims, current market conditions see elevated prices in many parts of the country. Usually, a used 2019 Civic Touring in excellent condition and low miles would sell for just a few thousand dollars below its original MSRP.

However, a quick look at the Autotrader classified page reveals various prices, grouped mainly by region. In some parts of the country, you’ll find a good condition, low-mileage 2019 Civic Touring selling for just a few hundred dollars above traditional book value, but in others, the price can be as much as $4,000 higher.

Currently, we see pricing range from a low of around $23,500 to as much as $29,000 for a Certified Pre-Owned in excellent condition.

For this reason, we suggest shopping in numerous regions and markets to find the best price on a used 2019 Civic Touring. See 2019 Honda Civic Touring models for sale

2019 Honda Civic Touring Includes:

  • Navigation – With satellite navigation, you’ll never have to worry about weak or lost cell coverage.
  • 450-watt audio – Although not a premium name brand, the Touring’s 10-speaker audio system sounds pretty darn good.
  • Rain-sensing wipers – Automatically activate when detecting rain or light snow.
  • Heated rear seats – On the sedan, there are individual heated seats to the outboard back seat passengers.

2019 Honda Civic Sport Touring (Hatchback)

The Sport Touring is available only in hatchback form. It pretty much mirrors most of the standard content found in the Touring sedan, but gets an upgraded audio system with 12 speakers and a 540-watt amp.

The Sport Touring’s hatchback design is more versatile, making it easier to load large amounts of stuff, or just a few bulkier things. The trade-off is a bit more road noise in the cabin and no way to securely lock up valuables as can be done using a metal trunk.

The Sport Touring hatchback has slightly more rear-seat headroom than the Touring sedan, but the Touring Sedan has more rear-seat legroom. Naturally, the hatchback has more cargo room than the sedan, an impressive 22.6 cubic feet with the rear seat up vs. 14.7 cubic feet.

The Sport Touring’s used pricing pretty much parallels that of the Touring. See 2019 Honda Civic Sport Touring models for sale

2019 Honda Civic Si and Civic Type R

The Civic Si and Civic Type-R are low-volume specialty trims aimed at enthusiast drivers. Of the two, the Si is the more affordable, with pricing comfortably placed between the Sport and EX trim. The Si comes in coupe and sedan form and includes a 205-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, 6-speed manual transmission, a performance suspension, and 19-inch wheels. Also standard is a 450-watt audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, Smart Entry with push-button start, and a power moonroof.

The Type R is far more aggressive with a price to match. When new, the Type R sold for around $37,000, so it is considerably more expensive than the Sport Touring hatchback.

Designed to battle with cars like the Subaru WRX and Ford Focus RS, the Type R comes with a 306-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and 6-speed manual transmission. Befitting its intended audience, Honda adorns the Type R with exaggerated body styling and an enormous rear wing.

Among the Type R’s more notable features are an adaptive damping suspension, Brembo brakes, 20-inch alloy wheels, and an aluminum hood. Also unique to the Type R are high-bolstered sport seats with red and black suede, sport pedals, and a G-force gauge.

Unlike the other Civic trims, the Si and Type R do not include the Honda Sensing suite of driver assists, although the Si does come standard with Honda LaneWatch. See 2019 Honda Civic SI models for sale or See 2019 Honda Civic Type R models for sale
