2022 Audi Q7: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2022 Audi Q7 brings Audi’s performance and technology expertise to a 7-passenger SUV that, even in base form, feels like you’ve hit the jackpot. Beyond its sleek styling and stunning interior, the Q7 provides a host of cutting-edge features, such as the brilliant Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster and an available Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium sound system.

Offered in three trims and with two engine options, the Q7 covers a lot of ground. There’s also the high-performance, 500-horsepower SQ7 for those who enjoy high speeds and a corner-hugging suspension. Of course, the V8-powered SQ7 costs a fair bit more than the Q7, so if you’re looking for a combination of value and performance, we think the Q7 55 with its 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 is the perfect compromise.

Though this current model has been around for a while (refreshed in 2020), the same can be said about its nearest competitors, SUVs like the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS, Lexus RX 350L, and Volvo XC90. For the same money, Lincoln’s Aviator is a newer design with equal sophistication and luxury, and like the Volvo and Lexus, offers something unavailable on the Q7: a hybrid engine option. 2022 Audi Q7 Premium (Starting at $55,800)

The Q7 45 TFSI derives power from a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. The Q7 55 TFSI ($61,200) is identically equipped but uses a more powerful turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine. Both versions come with Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system and 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 2.0-liter Q7 can hit 60 mph in 6.9 seconds and is tow-rated up to 4,400 pounds. The 3.0-liter engine lowers that time to 5.7 seconds and increases towing capacity to 7,700 pounds.

Given the Premium is the first trim in the Q7 stable, it comes pretty nicely equipped. A quick walk around the exterior reveals 19-inch alloy wheels on run-flat tires, power-folding heated side mirrors, and heat-insulating side and rear glass. The Q7 uses LEDs for the headlights and taillights, and the liftgate is power-operated with a hands-free release.

The 2022 Audi Q7 comes standard with three-row seating and leather upholstery. Accessing the third-row seat isn’t easy, requiring the manual operation of the second-row fold-and-tumble seats. The third-row seat is power-operated and can be folded flat via two buttons located in the rear cargo bay.

An Audi hallmark, the Q7’s interior is incredibly sumptuous. The front seats are heated, and the power driver’s seat includes a memory function for the side mirrors and power-adjustable steering column. An ambient interior lighting feature further enhances the Q7’s interior appeal.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the Q7’s interior is the Virtual Cockpit and dual infotainment and climate control panels. The Virtual Cockpit uses a sizeable 12.3-inch LCD in place of traditional analog gauges. The screen is configurable to look like an analog setup or minimized to give space to the Google Maps display when using navigation. It’s a pretty neat setup.

At the driver’s right is a 10.1-inch infotainment touch screen controlling the 10-speaker audio, standard Audi MMI navigation, Android Auto, and wireless Apple CarPlay integration. Below the infotainment screen is a smaller touch screen that operates the 3-zone automatic climate control and serves as a keyboard and writing tablet for the navigation system.

There are no knobs or dials on either display, meaning functions are carried out via touch and swipe gesture, steering wheel controls, or voice command (where applicable). The Q7 also comes with a six-month trial subscription to Audi Connect Prime and Audi Connect Plus online services.

On the convenience front, the power windows feature one-touch up/down operation. Cruise control is standard but adaptive cruise is not available on the Premium trim. A keyless entry fob also operates the push-button start and power liftgate.

There are USB ports in the front and second-row, but not in the third row, which also lacks air vents. Overhead, the Q7 has a massive panoramic sunroof with a power sunshade.

On the safety front, the Q7 Premium has your back. Standard low-speed automatic emergency braking includes pedestrian detection and the Audi pre-sense front and rear collision preparation system. Audi’s version of blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert is also standard, with an exit assist feature to warn of approaching traffic before you open the door.

Lane-departure warning, automatic high beam headlights, a rearview monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and rear-seat side airbags round out the safety systems.

Options for the Premium trim are limited to a 20-inch wheel upgrade and a few packages. Most notable is the Convenience package that brings a heated steering wheel, 360-degree Top View camera, and Audi Phone Box signal booster with wireless charge pad. A Tow package adds a hitch receiver and 7-pin connector.

There’s also a Black Optic package for a more menacing appearance.

Figuring in the $1,095 destination charge, a 2022 Audi Q7 Premium with no options costs $56,895. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing, the monthly payment comes to $1,022. Find a 2022 Audi Q7 2.0 T Premium for sale or Find a 2022 Audi Q7 3.0 T Premium for sale

2022 Audi Q7 Premium includes:

  • Virtual Cockpit — replaces traditional analog gauges with a digital screen configured to show gauges, maps, critical car information, or some combination of all three.
  • Panoramic sunroof — this vast glass panel covers the first and second rows and can partially open to allow fresh air to fill the cabin.
  • Power tilt and telescopic steering column — makes it easy to find the perfect driving position and is part of the driver’s seat memory feature.
  • Power liftgate — can be activated with the touch of a button or with a kicking gesture under the bumper.

2022 Audi Q7 Premium Plus ($58,700)

Of the three Q7 trim levels, we think the Premium Plus is the best value. It includes all the Premium features plus the contents of the Convenience package, then adds or upgrades with more standard equipment.

The audio gets a significant upgrade to a 1,900-watt, 23-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium sound system.

In addition to the Premium’s standard driver assists, the Premium Plus adds Active Lane Assist (lane centering) and adaptive cruise control with Traffic Jam Assist.

These additional features alone make the few thousand extra dollars the Premium Plus commands worth every penny. But it’s the optional Executive package unavailable on the Premium that puts the icing on the cake.

Choosing the Executive package brings 4-zone automatic climate control, rear door and tailgate sunshades, driver and passenger ventilated seats with 4-way power lumbar, and heated rear seats.

Also available are Matrix design LED headlights and a black cloth headliner, the latter being a no-charge option.

With destination fee, the 2022 Audi Q7 Premium Plus costs $59,795. That works out to $1,074 a month, or just $52 more than the Premium. Find a 2022 Audi Q7 2.0 T Premium Plus for sale or Find a 2022 Audi Q7 3.0 T Premium Plus for sale

2022 Audi Q7 Premium Plus includes:

  • Top View camera — this 360-degree camera gives a complete picture of the surrounding area. The camera can also show a 3D image of the Q7.
  • Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound — with 1,900 watts and 23 speakers, this excellent sound system rivals some of the finest in-home stereos.
  • Adaptive cruise control w/Traffic Jam Assist — allows the Q7 to maintain a safe distance from the traffic ahead. The system can slow and even stop the vehicle, the resume following the car ahead, perfect for stop-and-go traffic.
  • Wireless charging pad — located in the center console storage bin, this flat charging pad allows wireless charging for compatible smartphones.

2022 Audi Q7 Prestige ($72,000)

The top-line Prestige trim only comes with the larger 3.0-liter engine. It builds off the Premium Plus with the Executive package and Matrix headlight options, then adds 20-inch wheels, an adaptive air suspension, power soft-close doors, a head-up display, and contour/ambient multi-color LED lighting.

On the options side, buyers can opt for all-wheel steering, Audi laser headlights with power washers and dynamic front and rear turn indicators, plus thermal Night Vision Assist with large animal detection.

The Luxury package adds Valcona/Cricket leather interior with the Extended Leather package, massaging and ventilated front seats, memory function for the passenger seat, and an Alcantara headliner.

At $73,095 with destination, the Prestige is significantly more expensive than the Premium Plus and even more so with options added. On a 60-month loan at 3%, the Prestige will cost $1,313, or nearly $240 more a month over the Premium Plus. Find a 2022 Audi Q7 Prestige for sale

2022 Audi Q7 Prestige includes:

  • 3.0-liter turbocharged engine — with 335 horsepower, the Prestige shaves one second off the 2.0-liter’s 0 to 60-mph time and increases towing to 7,700 pounds.
  • Adaptive air suspension — automatically adjusts the suspension to adapting road conditions, ensuring a smooth ride when the surface gets rough and less lean and roll when the road begins to twist.
  • Power soft-close doors — no need to slam doors. Simply push the door until it latches, and the Q7 will make sure it seals properly.
  • Available all-wheel steering — steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction of the fronts, vastly improving steering response at high speeds and reducing turning diameter during low-speed maneuvers.

2022 Audi SQ7 ($86,500 Premium Plus), ($91,500 Prestige)

The SQ7 is the high-performance version of the Q7. Powered by a 500-horsepower turbocharged V8 engine, the SQ7 can bolt to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds.

The SQ7 starts with the Premium Plus. Included with this trim is all-wheel steering, S-tuned adaptive air suspension, adaptive cruise control with Traffic Jam Assist, Active Lane Assist, Matrix LED headlights, the Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium sound system, and Valcona leather sport seats.

Move up to the SQ7 Prestige, and you’ll gain all the features on the Q7 Prestige, but with the option for a Sport package containing a quattro sport rear differential, red-painted brake calipers, and Active Roll Stabilization.
