This is the only powertrain available in the base Audi TT coupe and convertible. The Audi TT Roadster is basically the same car as the coupe, minus the lack of its metal top. With the simple push of a button, the convertible mechanism folds back and the roof stows neatly behind the 2-passenger cabin. The price of the TT convertible starts at $53,900.
When it comes to the cabin, the same things previously stated about the coupe hold true for the convertible. Audi’s digital gauge cluster sits ahead of the driver, and controls for the infotainment system are positioned between the two seats, just ahead of the gear lever. With a little practice, it’s extremely easy to use, the menus are clear, and the graphics for the navigation system are rich in detail.
In a clever design twist, a circular knob in the center of each circular air vent holds the controls for temperature and fan speed. It’s a cool idea and, best of all, it works well.
Performance is on par with the coupe, though it’s worth pointing out that at 3,395 pounds, the TT convertible is nearly 200 pounds heavier than the TT coupe. The tradeoff is extremely small when it comes to overall performance, however. That’s especially true in hard cornering, where the tenacity of the all-wheel-drive system gives the TT loads of grip. That’s not a bad thing, considering it has more cargo space and something that at least resembles a rear seat. The main upgrade is the 2-liter turbo 4-cylinder that has been tuned to produce a total of 288 hp in the TTS.
The standard wheel size grows to 20-inch alloys, and an adaptive suspension comes standard, too. If straight-line performance is a prime concern, Audi estimates the TTS needs only 4.4 seconds to accelerate from zero to 60 mph.
