2022 Audi TT: Choosing the Right Trim

This buttoned-down sports car boasts handling agility, all-season AWD usability, and tech-savvy features.

The 2022 Audi TT comes standard with all-wheel drive, a choice of two turbocharged engines, and can be had in coupe or convertible format. This buttoned-down sports car has a reputation for handling agility, all-season usability (thanks to its AWD hardware), and a classy cabin filled with tech-savvy features.

The 2022 model year sees a new appearance package added to the TTS coupe, complete with bronze-colored wheels, satin bronze cabin trim, and upgraded leather seats with copper stitching. No surprise: It’s called the Bronze selection package.

With a starting price hovering just below $50,000 for the coupe, or around $54,00 for the convertible, rivals to the Audi TT include the Toyota Supra, BMW Z4, Porsche Boxster, and Jaguar F-Type.

Having all-wheel drive on every trim is one of the standout features of the Audi TT, that’s for certain. This generation dates back to the 2016 model year, so it’s not the freshest face on the sports-car block. With this in mind, Audi has made continual improvements over the years.

Updates have included the addition (and recent deletion) of the range-topping TT RS coupe, along with the standard fitment of comfort and tech touches such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, and blind-spot monitoring, to name a few.

Anyone who craves a fun-loving sports car, but hates complicated option packages, should consider themself lucky with the 2022 Audi TT. That’s because it’s offered in only two primary trims, and each comes with its own specific engine. The Audi TT coupe and convertible are motivated by a 228-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, while the TTS coupe comes with a more highly tuned 288-hp version of this same engine.

Which trim is the best for you? Let’s take a detailed look to learn what each has to offer.

2022 Audi TT Coupe 45 TFSI quattro (starting price $49,800)

In its simplest form, the Audi TT delivers a lot of car for the money. While the base 228-horsepower turbo 4-cylinder won’t scare the likes of Chevrolet Corvette or Porsche 718 Cayman/Boxster owners, the point of the entry-level TT coupe and convertible is more about balance, not the ultimate in tire-smoking driving antics. If you want to upgrade to a more potent powertrain, it means opting for the TTS coupe.

Working with a dual-clutch 7-speed automatic transmission, the TT scoots its way from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, according to Audi’s stopwatch.

Back for the 2022 model year, Audi added more standard features to the TT. These include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, two USB ports, blind-spot monitoring, and navigation.

Keep in mind, the TT doesn’t have a traditional infotainment screen in the middle of the dashboard. All vehicle information – including stereo settings and navigation commands – are located within a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster ahead of the driver. This creates a clean and simple cabin, though it does hinder having a passenger act as your onboard navigator and/or deejay.

When it comes to practicality, the TT coupe holds the advantage. It has 12 cubic feet of trunk space, versus fewer than 8 cubic feet in the convertible. The coupe also comes with two tiny rear seats, though these should only be considered an extension of the cargo area. Even the smallest and most patient kid would find them an impossible squeeze. 2022 Audi TT Coupe includes:

  • A 228-horsepower 2-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a dual-clutch 7-speed automatic transmission (DCT) and quattro AWD. This is the only powertrain available in the base Audi TT coupe and convertible. The power-hungry out there might want more ponies, though the economy of this engine is impressive at 23/31 mpg city/highway
  • Safety features include rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring. Unlike many rivals, the TT is not available with active safety items like forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, or lane-keep assist. Strange omissions for such a well-rounded sports car.
  • The available S-Line package includes 19-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels, black exhaust tips, 3-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, Audi virtual cockpit display with Sport visual mode, S Line sport suspension, Slate Grey interior trim, brushed-aluminum interior inlays, red brake calipers, gloss-black exterior trim, black side-mirror caps, black rear spoiler, and 245/35 R19 summer performance tires. This adds a little more agility to the TT coupe, not to mention added visual attitude.

2022 Audi TT Roadster 45 TFSI quattro (starting price $53,900)

The Audi TT Roadster is basically the same car as the coupe, minus the lack of its metal top. With the simple push of a button, the convertible mechanism folds back and the roof stows neatly behind the 2-passenger cabin. The price of the TT convertible starts at $53,900.

When it comes to the cabin, the same things previously stated about the coupe hold true for the convertible. Audi’s digital gauge cluster sits ahead of the driver, and controls for the infotainment system are positioned between the two seats, just ahead of the gear lever. With a little practice, it’s extremely easy to use, the menus are clear, and the graphics for the navigation system are rich in detail.

In a clever design twist, a circular knob in the center of each circular air vent holds the controls for temperature and fan speed. It’s a cool idea and, best of all, it works well.

Performance is on par with the coupe, though it’s worth pointing out that at 3,395 pounds, the TT convertible is nearly 200 pounds heavier than the TT coupe. The tradeoff is extremely small when it comes to overall performance, however. That’s especially true in hard cornering, where the tenacity of the all-wheel-drive system gives the TT loads of grip. 2022 Audi TT Roadster includes:

  • The same 228-horsepower 2-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a 7-speed DCT and quattro AWD that’s found in the coupe.
  • A choice of eight exterior colors, with the option to order a custom color via Audi’s exclusive paint color catalog. This is a pricey extra, however, at roughly $4,000.
  • Available brushed aluminum trim on the dashboard costs about $2,000.
  • Like the coupe, the TT convertible can be equipped with the S-Line competition package. This includes 19-inch Audi Sport 5-spoke alloy wheels, black roll bars (convertible only) black exhaust tips, 3-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, brushed aluminum cabin inlays, S-Line sport suspension, red brake calipers, black side-mirror caps, gloss-black exterior trim, fixed black rear spoiler, and 245/35 R19 summer performance tires.

2022 Audi TTS Coupe (starting price $59,500)

If you’ve come this far, then get ready to say goodbye to the TT convertible. Adding the more powerful optional turbo engine means going with the TT in coupe format. That’s not a bad thing, considering it has more cargo space and something that at least resembles a rear seat. The main upgrade is the 2-liter turbo 4-cylinder that has been tuned to produce a total of 288 hp in the TTS.

The standard wheel size grows to 20-inch alloys, and an adaptive suspension comes standard, too. If straight-line performance is a prime concern, Audi estimates the TTS needs only 4.4 seconds to accelerate from zero to 60 mph. Top speed jumps to 155 mph, versus a 130-mph maximum in the standard TT. Find a 2022 Audi TTS Coupe for sale

2022 Audi TTS Coupe includes:

  • An available Black Optic Package adds 20-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels, red brake calipers, gloss-black exterior trim, and 255/30 R20 summer tires. Other than the fancier wheels and stickier tires, this is primarily an appearance package.
  • Available Bronze selection package is added for the 2022 model year.
  • The Competition Package is pricier, but includes more performance goodies. These include 20-inch black-painted alloy wheels, black rear spoiler, gloss-black exterior trim, leather, Alcantara-covered flat-bottom steering wheel, and red brake calipers.
