2022 BMW 4 Series: Choosing the Right Trim

Think of BMW’s 2022 4 Series as the newer, sportier cousin of the long-lived 3 Series sedan.

The 4 Series comes in 2-door coupe or convertible form, with a variety of powertrains choices. A super high-performance M4 Coupe variant is available for hard-core sports car enthusiasts.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe has four doors and is considered a separate model.

We can’t say we are fans of the oversized grille on the latest 430i, but if you can get past its gaping nostrils, the coupe body style is elegant and athletic.

The 2-door body style has room for four adults, but those in the rear will find the quarters cramped.

Headroom improves dramatically in the convertible version with the top lowered. The soft-top is available for an extra $7,500.

Like most BMWs, the 430i comes as standard with rear-wheel drive (RWD), which generally delivers sportier handling characteristics than front-wheel-drive (FWD) designs.

However, BMW also offers its all-wheel-drive (AWD) system – xDrive – on the 430i for a $2,000 premium. We would recommend that expenditure if you live in the Snowbelt.

Under the hood, the 430i uses a 255-horsepower 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

While this engine is perfectly willing, we would find the more muscular performance of the bigger powerplant in the M440i hard to pass up. On the other hand, the M440i does cost an extra $10,900, which makes the 430i the obvious choice if budget is an issue.

Standard equipment in the 430i includes 18-inch wheels, run-flat tires, moonroof, power front seats, navigation system, cruise control, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

The 40/20/40-split rear seat folds to give access to the trunk.

Safety features include blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning. Additional optional safety aids include active cruise control with stop and go, lane-keep assist, and front cross-traffic alert.

There is a multitude of packages available for the 430i. Tread carefully, or you will quickly drive up the bottom line price of the car. For buyers in cold-weather areas, the $2,150 premium package is worth the investment, as it brings a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, lumbar support, and a head-up display.

For $3,300, the M Sport package includes 19-inch wheels, sport suspension, aerodynamic body kit, variable sport steering, sport steering wheel, and LED fog lights.

If you are looking for extra handling prowess, a $2,450 dynamic handling package adds 19-inch wheels, sport brakes with blue or red calipers, sport differential, and an active suspension system.

Including the $995 destination fee, the BMW 430i sticker comes to $46,795. Three percent financing over 60 months and no money down would produce a monthly payment of $803. Find a 2022 BMW 430i for sale

Stepping up to the M440i trim level brings a smooth and powerful 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine packing 382 horsepower.

As with the 430i, the M440i comes as a convertible for an extra $7,500, and AWD adds $2,000.

The larger engine is not the only benefit that comes with the M440i. The higher trim also comes as standard with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, plus most of the features of the M Sport and dynamic handling packages.

Otherwise, the M440i includes the same standard feature set as the 430i, along with a similarly long list of packages and options.

Including the $995 destination fee, the BMW M440i sticker comes to $57,695. Given 3% financing over 60 months and no cash down, that would produce a monthly payment of $990. Find a 2022 BMW M440i for sale

For the ultimate in 4 Series performance, the M4 is the trim to choose from, although it comes at a steep price. As with lesser 4 Series 2-door trims, the M4 comes as standard with RWD, but the higher output trim can be ordered with AWD and in AWD convertible form.

The base M4 comes with a 473-horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, while the $74,700 M4 Competition Coupe ups the engine output to 503 hp. The M4 Competition Coupe can also be specified in AWD form for an extra $4,100. Opting for the AWD convertible version pushes the price up to $86,300.

The M4 trims come with “staggered” wheels, meaning the rear wheels are larger than those in front. In the base M4, the standard wheelset is 18-inch/19-inch, with an optional 19-inch/20-inch combination. The higher trims come with a choice of different style 19-inch/20-inch wheels.

M4 trims come as standard with many options from lesser 4 Series trims, but there are still several packages available. For example, the $1,550 executive package includes remote engine start, heated steering wheel, head-up display, and gesture control (hand gestures can control various infotainment functions, such as volume control).

The BMW M4 carries a sticker price of $72,795, including a $995 destination fee. With 3% financing over 60 months and zero down, expect a monthly payment of $1,250. Find a 2022 BMW M4 Coupe for sale or Find a 2022 BMW M4 Convertible for sale
