2022 BMW 8 Series: Choosing the Right Trim

Big luxury coupes are a dying breed and almost non-existent in the near-luxury and family sedan realm. That’s why the BMW 8 Series Coupe, Convertible, and 4-door Gran Coupe are so unique and why BMW continues to serve a small but faithful audience.

Like the larger 7 Series, the 8 Series cars come pretty well equipped right out of the box. There are a handful of option packages and upgrades, and differences boil down mainly to performance.

BMW also offers an exclusive customer customization program known as BMW Individual, which allows specific models to be custom-tailored with unique paint, wheel, and interior color choices.

The 840i Coupe and Convertible are really just 2-people affairs, with a tiny backseat suitable only for children, cargo, or the occasional straggler that needs a quick ride someplace. However, the 8 Series Gran Coupe rides on a longer wheelbase and therefore offers a larger, yet still snug, rear seat plus two additional doors that make it easier for rear-seat passengers to enter and exit. 2022 BMW 840i Coupe (Starting at $85,000)

It all starts with the 840i Coupe that serves as the template for the rest of the 8 Series cars. As such, the 840i’s standard equipment list applies to the convertible and Gran Coupe, with only some variation applicable to the body style of each vehicle.

The standard engine is a 335-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder paired with an 8-speed automatic and a Sport exhaust. In typical BMW form, the 8-speed includes paddle shifters for manual gear changes and launch control for more reliable off-the-line performance.

BMW’s Driving Dynamics Control allows the driver to adjust settings for the throttle, steering assist, and suspension with modes for Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport.

The 840i Coupe can dash to 60 miles per hour in just 4.7 seconds and achieves a top speed of 130 mph.

Helping with the 840i’s performance aspirations are all-season run-flat tires surrounding 19-inch alloy wheels. These handsome double-spoke wheels attach to a rather sophisticated suspension equipped with adaptive dampers that automatically adjust to varying road surfaces. Behind each wheel are M Sport brakes with blue-painted calipers.

Rounding out the standard performance features is an M Sport rear differential and an aerodynamic body kit.

On the luxury front, the 840i impresses with its standard Merino leather upholstery in a choice of six colors and Nappy leather instrument panel. The 16-way power-adjustable front seats are heated, naturally, as are the steering wheel and armrests.  The seats also include power adjustments for the width and manual thigh support.

The Advanced Key proximity key fob allows entry with just the touch of the door handle, and once inside, a push of a button is all it takes to start the car. The fob also has automatic memory settings for the seat and mirror position, the last climate-control temperature setting and fan speed, audio volume, and station presets. The same fob operates the hands-free power trunk lid.

Climate controls are fully automatic, separated into left and right zones. The 840i’s tilt/telescopic steering column is power-adjustable, and the passenger-side outside mirror tilts down when the transmission is placed in reverse.

The 840i’s wipers come on automatically when sensing rain and also activate the headlights, you can open the power windows remotely, and the doors feature an automatic soft-close mechanism. A wireless charging pad and two USB ports handle smartphone duty.

Ironically, the 840i’s Dynamic Cruise Control isn’t fully adaptive. If you want a system that can maintain a set distance to the vehicles ahead or stop and go in tight traffic, you’ll have to check an option package.

Technology is one of BMW’s most substantial areas of expertise, so it should come as no surprise the 840i includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a central message screen and head-up display. Standard navigation operates through a 10.25-inch display controlled via touch, voice activation, or the iDrive touchpad controller.

Infotainment is also handled by the center display, comprised of a 464-watt, 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and a 1-year trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio. BMW’s Connected Package Professional is standard and includes real-time traffic information, parking info (select cities), and services that can unlock doors, help locate a stolen vehicle and serve as a concierge.

Finally, when it comes to safety, the 840i has everyone covered. Beyond the mandatory airbags and anti-lock brakes, The 840i features adaptive LED headlights, adaptive brake lights, and automatic high beams. Frontal collision warning with low-speed automatic emergency braking is on board, as is lane-departure warning. BMW Assist eCall features an SOS emergency call button and automatically contacts the BMW Assist center when the system detects a severe accident (such as when the airbags deploy).

Even with all these standard features, buyers can still choose even more luxury and technology options.

The Driving Assistance Package brings Parking Assistant Plus that can self-parallel park, along with Active Blind Spot Detection and Active Park Distance Control (front and rear parking sensors). A 3D-view surround camera and a Drive Recorder camera are also included.

The Driving Assistance Professional Package brings Steering and Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Change Assist, Emergency Stop Assist, and Evasion Aid. Extended Traffic Jam Assist provides partially automated steering assist in certain low-speed traffic situations.

Other options worth noting include ventilated front seats, a 16-speaker, 1400-watt Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround sound system, and Integral Active Steering that allows the rear wheels to help steer the vehicle.

Figuring in the $995 destination fee, a 2022 BMW 840i Coupe costs $85,995. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing, the monthly payment will be $1,545. Find a BMW 840i coupe for sale

2022 BMW 840i Coupe includes:

  • 16-way seats – designed to hold firmly in aggressive driving, these seats feature power-adjustable bolsters, a manual thigh support extension, and 4-way power-adjustable lumbar.
  • 12.3-inch digital cluster – simulates gauges for speed and engine revs and provides numerous information displays, including navigation, messages, and widgets.
  • Harman Kardon audio system – This 16-speaker audio system provides excellent sound at deafening volumes. However, if H/K isn’t highbrow enough, you can always upgrade to the Bowers & Wilkins system.
  • M Sport performance upgrades – from the Sport exhaust to the M-Sport-inspired seats and more aggressive M Sport brakes, the 840i Coupe is designed to perform.

2022 BMW 840i xDrive Coupe ($87,900)

The 840i xDrive is the all-wheel-drive version of the 840i. Its standard and optional equipment are identical, as are all its engine, transmission, and suspension systems. The 840i xDrive is a tad faster, with a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds.

With the $995 destination charge, the 2022 BMW 840i xDrive sells for $88,895. On a 60-month loan at 3%, the monthly payment comes to $1,597, just $52 more a month than the rear-drive 840i. Find a BMW 840i xDrive Coupe for sale

2022 BMW 840i Convertible ($94,400)

Like the 840i Coupe, the convertible’s standard features list tends to be generous. The two cars are nearly identical, except for the retractable soft top. The convertible does have a few differences of note, beginning with a slower 0 to 60 mph time of 5 seconds flat courtesy of the convertible’s added weight.

Because the top needs someplace to hide when retracted, the 840i Convertible gives up about two cubic feet of trunk space. And because a convertible needs additional occupant protection in the event of a rollover, BMW’s Rollover Protection System is installed behind the rear head restraints.

The convertible offers one option package not available on the Coupe, the Comfort Seating Package that adds ventilated front seats with built-in neck warmers that blow hot air from just below the head restraints.

With destination, the 2022 BMW 840i Convertible sells for $95,395. On a 60-month loan at 3% APR financing, the monthly payment comes to $1,714, or about $170 more a month than the 840i Coupe. Find a BMW 840i Convertible for sale

2022 BMW 840i Convertible includes:

  • Power retractable soft top – this padded and insulated top retracts quickly to hide beneath a rear tonneau cover. When in place, the top does an excellent job of sealing out wind and road noise. The roof raises and lowers in about 15 seconds and can operate at speeds below 30 mph.
  • Available neck warmers – positioned just below each front seat head restraint, the neck warmers blow warm air at three different settings, helping keep front seat occupants warm when the air gets cool.
  • Rollover Protection System – consists of two pop-up roll bars behind the rear head restraints that activate if the system detects a potential rollover situation.
  • Available Parking Assistant Plus – no need to fear parallel parking; the optional parking aid can do it for you. Simply pull up to an open space, activate the system, and follow the prompts. The 840i does the rest.

2022 BMW 840i xDrive Convertible ($97,300)

The 840i xDrive Convertible mimics the 840i Convertible’s standard and optional equipment list, the one difference being the all-wheel-drive system replaces the M Sport rear differential.

Adding in the $995 destination fee, the 2022 BMW 840i xDrive Convertible costs $98,275. The monthly payment comes to $1,766, or $52 more a month than the 840i Convertible. Find a BMW 840i xDrive Convertible for sale

2022 BMW M850i xDrive Coupe and Convertible ($99,900 and $109,400)

Building off the 840i platform, the M850i xDrive Coupe and Convertible bring more performance to the table courtesy of a 523-horsepower turbocharged V8 engine. All-wheel drive is standard, as is a 0 to 60-mph time of 3.5 seconds for the Coupe and 3.8 seconds for the Convertible.

Upgrades over the 840i xDrive include an M Sport differential, 20-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, ventilated front seats, and additional M-inspired styling cues.

Optional equipment unique to the M850i xDrive includes a carbon-fiber roof cap, expanded engine cooling via a more significant fan and engine oil cooler, and high-performance tires.

With destination, the M850i xDrive Coupe and Convertible sell for $100,895 and $110,395, respectively. Monthly payments on a 60-month loan at 3% come to $1,813 and $1,984. Find a BMW M850i xDrive for sale

2022 BMW 840i and 840i xDrive Gran Coupe ($85,000 and $87,900)

The 4-door version of the 840i and 840i xDrive offers a bit more rear-seat volume and trunk space, two extra doors, plus a few more standard features, yet holds the same price as their coupe cousins.

Because it’s actually a sedan, the Gran Coupe comes standard with a power rear sunshade, a panoramic moonroof, and automatic 4-zone climate control.

As pricing is identical to the Coupe, the same monthly payment also applies. Find a BMW 840i xDrive Gran Coupe for sale

M850i xDrive Gran Coupe ($99,900)

The M850i xDrive Gran Coupe’s standard and optional equipment inventory look very much like that of the M850i xDrive Coupe. It also costs the same.

Like the 840i Gran Coupe, the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe includes the following additional equipment: 4-zone automatic climate control, a power rear sunshade, panoramic sunroof, and ventilated front seats.

The M850i xDrive Gran Coupe can dash to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph (155 with the upgraded performance tires and cooling package). Find a BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupe for sale
