Sized to fit most lifestyles and family garages, the 2022 BMW X4 “Sports Activity Vehicle” delivers impressive performance, craftsmanship, and technology.
Based on the same platform as the BMW X3, the X4 has a more coupe-like appearance, with a sloping rear hatchback that gives it a longer overall length but less height, resulting in an inch less rear-seat headroom and five cubic feet less cargo space.
Like the X3, the X4 offers buyers several models and engine choices, although, in the X4’s case, xDrive all-wheel drive comes standard. That leaves three excellent options: X4 xDrive30i, X4 M40i, and tire-smoking 503-horsepower X4 M Competition.
Unlike other manufacturers, BMW doesn’t assign specific trim names to its vehicles. Instead, it gives buyers the options to pick and choose features and packages as they see fit.
And while you can find the same advanced driver assists and high-tech cabin interior features in lesser makes (think Kia and Volkswagen), they can’t match the X4’s performance, handling, and overall high-brow status. Find a 2022 BMW X4 for sale
2022 BMW X4 xDrive30i (Starting at $51,800)
The 2022 BMW X4 xDrive30i comes standard with a 248-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and BMW’s legendary xDrive all-wheel-drive system. An 8-speed automatic with paddle-shifting capability helps rocket the 4,100-pound X4 to 60 mph in just six seconds.
What separates xDrive from other all-wheel-drive systems is its nod to performance driving. Beyond the ability to handle hazards like snow, rain, mud, and even some off-road adventures, xDrive maintains a rear-wheel bias, meaning the system works to supply more power to the rear wheels during aggressive driving situations.
Standard Driving Dynamics Control allows the driver to select various modes controlling the throttle, gearshifts, and steering response. The Sport mode is the most fun, but Comfort and Eco Pro prove surprisingly good at delivering a comfortable ride and modest fuel savings.
In keeping with the X4’s sporty image, BMW includes several performance features that are optional on the X3. Performance control individually controls the amount of power to each wheel, which significantly improves traction during aggressive cornering. The variable-ratio sport steering delivers M-like results, with better feedback to the driver when rounding challenging curves.
Other electronic driving aids include Hill Descent Control (slows the vehicle in steep descents), Start Off Assist (keeps the car from rolling backward once the brake is released), and Brake Drying, which helps keep water from getting between the rotor disc and brake pads.
Now, before we press on with the fun stuff, let’s quickly cover the standard equipment one would expect to find on a $50,000 SUV. The X4 includes tri-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, panoramic glass sunroof, power front sport seats with driver’s seat memory, rain-sensing wipers, and tilt/telescopic steering wheel. Also in the mix is a remote keyless entry system with a key fob that remembers the last settings for the audio, ventilation controls, power driver’s seat, and mirrors.
Features such as 19-inch alloy wheels, power rear tailgate, and power-folding heated side mirrors all come with the price of admission. The driver’s-side mirror has an auto-dimming feature, while the passenger side tilts down when placing the vehicle in reverse. Adaptive LED headlights include cornering lights that illuminate the corresponding fog light when the turn signal is activated.
Covering the X4’s seats is a perforated synthetic leather called SensaTec, but buyers can upgrade to genuine leather if they choose. Rear-seat passengers sit on a 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat and have their own climate controls and air vents.
The X4 comes standard with BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional, which brings a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and advanced cloud-based navigation for faster response times as well as real-time traffic updates and routing. BMW’s Personal Assistant is on board, responding to the phrase “Hey, BMW.” Once activated, the assistant can control cabin temperature, locate a favorite radio station, or inform the driver about critical car and maintenance information.
The X4’s infotainment system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a Wi-Fi hotspot, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth streaming. The system’s audio component consists of a 205-watt amplifier powering 12 speakers.
Ordinarily, BMW buyers can upgrade to a Harman Kardon audio system, but at the moment, the option does not appear on the company’s consumer website. Post pandemic shortages are most likely the issue.
On the driver-assist front, the X4 includes forward-collision warning, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning into a single standard grouping. Also included are front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera.
The X4’s optional equipment list is nearly as long as its standard features, with many of the most desirable options bundled into packages.
The Convenience Package brings proximity keyless entry and start, and power lumbar support.
The Premium Package adds the contents from the Convenience Package, then offers a choice of heated front or front and rear seats, a head-up display, and a three-spoke heated steering wheel.
The M Sport Package adds a choice of 19-, 20-, and 21-inch wheels, Shadowline exterior trim, more aggressive front and rear fascias, and an M steering wheel.
The Park Assistance Package brings Park Assist Plus, Active Park Distance Control, and 360-degree surround-view camera. These systems provide self-parallel and perpendicular parking, help the driver back into a previously held parking space, and give a top-view image of the X4 and its surroundings.
The Driving Assistance Pro Package adds Extended Traffic Jam Assist and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go ability, allowing the X4 to autonomously navigate traffic without driver intervention.
For those seeking an even better driving experience, the Dynamic Handling Package adds active dampers and M sport brakes with blue or red calipers.
Other options include Vernasca leather upholstery, wireless smartphone charge pad, ventilated front seats, driver recorder (think dash cam), multicolor ambient interior lighting, and remote start.
