2022 Dodge Durango: Choosing the Right Trim

Plenty of 3-row SUVs are on the market, but not many midsize models with the looks, attitude, or muscle of the 2022 Dodge Durango. The Durango sets its own terms, not quite as large as a Chevrolet Tahoe, but bigger than a Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander. It can comfortably seat up to seven, tow up to 8,700 pounds, and accelerate like nobody’s business.

Better still, we expect the entry-level 7-passenger Durango SXT to start in the mid-$30,000 range, with the V8-powered R/T starting around $45,000. Compare that to the V8-powered Chevy Tahoe or Toyota Sequoia that begin closer to $50,000, and the Durango starts to look like a real bargain.

Well-equipped and with an attractive list of optional equipment, the 2022 Dodge Durango may be growing old by some standards, but it continues to be competitive. Based on the previous-generation Grand Cherokee platform, Durango’s rugged design makes it a solid player both on- and off-road.

The Durango’s standard V6 is more than enough to get it going, but Dodge offers two optional V8s for those seeking more power and better performance.

Rear-wheel drive is standard on all, but the top-line SRT 392 comes with an all-wheel-drive system.

2022 Dodge Durango SXT (Starting at $35,475)

As the least-expensive 2022 Dodge Durango, the SXT is a surprisingly well-appointed vehicle. Newly standard for 2022 is 3-row seating, power driver’s seat, front and rear parking sensors, and bright roof rails.

Dodge keeps the Durango’s price competitive by making most driver-assists optional, something no other competitor does.

Standard in the SXT is a 293-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine with a max tow rating of 6,200 pounds.

A check of the SXT’s exterior reveals LED low-beam headlights, LED DRLs, heated power side mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a roof rack with stowed crossbars built into the rails. Speed-sensitive variable front wipers and a rear wiper washer are also standard.

Moving to the SXT interior, we find a 7-inch digital display embedded in the instrument cluster that serves as a digital speedometer and a display for audio, warning lights, and fuel economy. Tri-zone automatic climate control covers all three rows, with rear-seat ceiling vents and controls.

The SXT’s cloth-covered front bucket seats include a fold-flat front passenger seat. Separating the front seats is a large center console with two 12-volt outlets and a lighted USB port.

The 3-row Durango has a 2/3/2 configuration, with 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third-row seat. Fold that seat flat, and cargo volume increases to 43.3 cubic feet.

Standard amenities include one-touch up/down power front windows, cruise control, a manual tilt/telescoping steering wheel with paddle shifters, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, and a proximity key fob with pushbutton start.

The standard infotainment system is Dodge’s Uconnect 4C, including an 8.4-inch touch screen, AM/FM/CD/DVD, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Bluetooth streaming SiriusXM satellite radio.

On the safety and driver-assist front, the Durango SXT comes with a complete set of airbags, including 3-row side curtain airbags. Also standard is electronic traction and stability control and hill-start assist. Standard driver-assists include a blind-spot monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and rear cross-traffic detection.

Optional for the SXT is full-time all-wheel drive, power sunroof, upgraded wheel-and-tire packages, second-row fold-and-tumble captain’s chair seating, leather seating, and various exterior visual enhancement packages.

The Popular Equipment Group adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, and power rear liftgate.

The Trailer Tow group adds a heavy-duty engine oil cooler, Class IV hitch receiver, load-leveling rear suspension, integrated trailer brake switch, and full-size spare tire.

With a destination fee of $1,595, the 2022 Dodge Durango SXT costs $37,070. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $666. See 2022 Dodge Durango SXT models for sale

FAQ

  • What is the best 2022 Dodge Durango trim?

We like the Dodge Durango SXT, which is roughly half the price of the SRT 392 but is remarkably well-equipped for a base model. It may not be as sporty or as opulent as the SRT 392, but the SXT shines as a rugged and roomy 3-row family hauler.

  • How many mpg does the 2022 Dodge Durango get?

The rear-wheel-drive (RWD) 2022 Dodge Durango with the 3.6-liter V6 is rated by the EPA at 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway/21 mpg combined.  With all-wheel drive (AWD), the Durango V6 is nearly as efficient, with EPA ratings of 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway/21 mpg combined. The AWD 2022 Dodge Durango powered by the 5.7-liter V8 is much thirstier, with EPA ratings of 14 mpg city/22 mpg highway/16 mpg combined.

  • Which 2022 Dodge Durango trim level offers the most safety?

While all Dodge Durangos are safe, the adaptive suspension damping and large Brembo brakes of the SRT 392 model give it an edge in overall dynamic safety. By this, we mean hardware that may prevent you from getting in an accident in the first place.
