2022 Ford Bronco: Choosing the Right Trim

Having just launched in 2021, it’s no surprise nothing much changed for the 2022 Ford Bronco.

Other than floor mats, a couple of new exterior paint schemes, and the availability of the manual transmission with the Sasquatch Package, there’s nothing new to discuss.

After what seemed like years of Ford teasing us with talk of resurrecting the Bronco nameplate, it finally rolled into showrooms for 2021.

After all that hype, Ford needed it to be a home run, and by all accounts, it is.

The Jeep Wrangler is Bronco’s main rival.

We like Bronco for its retro styling, strong turbocharged engines, off-road capability, and quick-release removable doors and roof on all versions.

Ford offers Bronco in two- and four-door configurations. Sadly, only the four-door can be fitted with the soft top. Two-door models get a removable molded hardtop.

The trim-level lineup is Base, Big Bend, Black Diamond, Outer Banks, Badlands, and Wildtrak.

Power & Fuel Economy

Standard in every Bronco is 4-wheel drive (4WD).

The base engine is a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine. A 7-speed (six speeds plus Crawl) manual transmission feeds engine production to all four wheels.

You can opt for a 10-speed automatic for $1,595.

A 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 is standard for WildTrak and optional ($1,895) in all other grades. The 10-speed automatic hustles power to the wheels.

EPA fuel economy for both engines can vary a little based on the trim level. However, there doesn’t appear to be any difference based on the door count.

With the 2.3-liter turbo, the 2022 Ford Bronco with a manual or automatic transmission is rated at 20 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg in combined driving.

For the Badlands trim with the 2.3L and manual transmission, the mileage is 16 mpg city/17 mpg highway/17 mpg combined. With the 10-speed automatic, it’s 17 mpg/17 mpg/17 mpg.

Moving up to the 2.7-liter V6 with the 10-speed automatic transmission, the standard Bronco gets 19 mpg city/20 mpg highway/19 mpg combined.

For the Badlands V6, those numbers drop to 17 mpg/17 mpg/17 mpg.

2022 Ford Bronco Base (starting at $29,300)

2022 Ford Bronco Base Front Right

The 2022 Ford Bronco Base starts at $29,300.

All prices listed are for the two-door models. Moving up to the 4-door in the Base grade costs $4,150.

This is the no-frills Bronco.

As you work through the trim levels, you need to pay attention. Bronco grades don’t necessarily add to the content of the next-lowest-priced trim.

Base includes 16-inch steel wheels, fender tie-down hooks, removable hardtop, carpeted flooring, air conditioning, cruise control, and an 8-inch digital gauge display.

Also included are two 12-volt power ports, cloth-covered bucket seats, power windows, remote keyless entry, and push-button start.

Hill-descent control, hill-start assist, and the Terrain Management System are also standard.

The infotainment system includes an 8-inch touchscreen, a 6-speaker audio system, Sync 4, Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and satellite radio capability.

Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite of driver aids is standard. It includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and high-beam assist.

You can pick up the Sasquatch Package for $6,590. It adds 17-inch beadlock-capable alloy wheels, additional ground clearance, position-sensitive Bilstein shocks, and a 4.7 final drive with electronic locking front and rear differentials.

Adding the $1,495 destination fee to the Base price brings the total to $30,795. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to $553 per month. See 2022 Ford Bronco Base models for sale

2022 Ford Bronco Base includes:

  • Terrain Management System – This driver-selectable system allows picking any of five G.O.A.T. (Go Over Any Terrain) Modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery, or Sand.
  • Forward-collision warning – Using a forward-pointing camera and radar technology, this system scans the road ahead and warns the driver of any collision risk audibly and visually. If the driver doesn’t react to the warning, the system automatically applies the brakes.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – Allows your smartphone to interface with your vehicle. Not only can you access the music on your phone, but you can also send messages, receive messages, make calls, and so forth through your vehicle’s media system. You can make the interface connection without cables.

2022 Ford Bronco Big Bend (starting at $33,785)

Adding the $1,495 destination fee to the Big Bend base price equals $35,280. Financing with no money down for 60 months at 3% interest works out to $634 per month. See 2022 Ford Bronco Big Bend models for sale

2022 Ford Bronco Big Bend includes:

  • AC power outlet – This household 110-volt power outlet allows you to connect electric devices requiring AC current.
  • Mud/Ruts mode – Adding more versatility to Bronco’s Terrain Management System, this mode sends maximum torque to all four wheels.
  • Remote start – When within range, you can start the vehicle from outside it with the key fob. It’s handy for precooling the vehicle in summer and preheating it in winter.

2022 Ford Bronco Black Diamond (starting at $36,450)

2022 Ford Bronco Black Diamond Front in Red

The 2022 Ford Bronco Black Diamond starts at $36,450.

Black Diamond also qualifies for the Mid and Sasquatch Packages.

Adding the $1,495 destination fee to the Black Diamond base price totals $37,945. With no money down for 60 months at 3% interest, financing works out to $682 per month. See 2022 Ford Bronco Black Diamond models for sale

2022 Ford Bronco Outer Banks Front Left in Yellow

The 2022 Ford Bronco Outer Banks starts at $39,355.

Outer Banks suddenly adds an array of standard technology that, to this point, was only available in the Mid Package.

Outer Banks builds on the Big Bend trim. Consequently, it loses Rock Crawl mode and the steel bumpers.

Standard content includes the 10-speed automatic transmission, 18-inch aluminum wheels, LED headlights, LED taillights, and powder-coated side tube steps.

Heated front seats are included, as well.

Also standard are the Mid Package features itemized above plus rear parking assist, remote start, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist with steering, and Driver Alert.

For $1,295, you can add the High Package. It gains you a 12-inch touchscreen, a surround-view camera, and front parking assist.

Another $3,590 gets you the Lux Package. It adds adaptive cruise control, a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, Evasive Steering Assist, a heated steering wheel, more USB ports, and wireless phone charging.

Adding the $1,495 destination fee to the Outer Banks base price brings the total to $40,850. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to $734 per month. See 2022 Ford Bronco Outer Banks models for sale

2022 Ford Bronco Badlands (starting at $42,495)

2022 Ford Bronco Badlands front in black

The 2022 Ford Bronco Badlands starts at $42,495.

With the Badlands, Bronco takes off-roading up a notch or two.

Badlands builds on Big Bend. Therefore, it loses most of what Outer Banks gained.

It adds upgraded off-road tires, full-underbody bash plates, front stabilizer bar disconnect, and electronic locking front and rear differentials.

Also standard on Badlands is an advanced 4WD system with an on-demand two-speed transfer case. It adds back in Rock Crawl mode plus Baja mode to the Terrain Management System.

You can trick out the Badlands even further with the Sasquatch Package.

Adding the $1,495 destination fee to the Bandland’s base price totals $43,990. Financing with no money down for 60 months at 3% interest works out to a monthly payment of $790. See 2022 Ford Bronco Badlands models for sale

2022 Ford Bronco Badlands includes:

  • Front stabilizer bar disconnect – This allows the driver to disconnect the stabilizer bar for greater front-wheel articulation.
  • Locking differentials – Electronic locking differentials front and rear ensure the wheels on the same axle rotate at exactly the same speed. This increases traction at low speeds.
  • Baja mode – The final piece of the Terrain Management System, Baja allows for high-speed off-road driving by automatically engaging 4WD high gear. Rock Crawl is also included.

2022 Ford Bronco Wildtrak (starting at $47,780)

Adding the $1,495 destination fee to Wildtrak’s base price brings the total to $49,275. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to $885 per month. See 2022 Ford Bronco Wildtrak models for sale

  • Trail Control – Trail Control is low-speed off-road cruise control.

2022 Ford Bronco Raptor (starting at $70,000 estimated)

When the fun-loving engineers at Ford Performance get together to create the most dirt-worthy version of the Ford Bronco, what do they build? The new 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor, which will draw crowds when it arrives at Ford dealers this summer.

The Bronco Raptor recipe is pretty simple. Make a stronger, fully boxed frame out of high-strength steel, and totally alter the shock towers to allow for a sturdy long-travel suspension that features remote-reservoir coil-over Fox shock absorbers, sturdy lower control arms, and beefy, widened axles front and rear. There also is a B-pillar crossbar and strengthened C-pillars for added chassis rigidity.

What’s more, this new Bronco Raptor is fitted with 37-inch BFGoodrich K02 all-terrain tires, which help to provide 13.1 inches of ground clearance, nearly 5 inches more than a stock 4-door Bronco. In spite of this excellent clearance, sturdy skidplates protect the Raptor’s underbody.

But what’s under the Bronco Raptor’s hood (made of a sheet-molded compound, just like the widened front fenders and rear quarter panels)? That would be a twin-turbo  3.0-liter EcoBoost V6, which sends “more than 400 horsepower” to the wheels via a paddle-shift 10-speed automatic transmission.

The 4WD system, of note, has three modes and a stronger clutch to better withstand the rigors of off-road driving. There’s also a 67.7:1 crawl ratio for those technical trails littered with rocks and tricky sections.

Further setting the Bronco Raptor apart is a 12-inch digital instrument cluster with Performance View, which emphasizes the tachometer and gear readouts. There’s also a thick-rim steering wheel with magnesium shift paddles.

The base 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor has black vinyl upholstery, rubberized floor coverings, and a lot of accents in Ford Performance Code Orange. Upmarket Bronco Raptors have upholstery done in a perforated synthetic suede, together with carpeted flooring.

Also notable: All 2022 Ford Bronco Raptors are 4-door models, and all come standard with a High Package that includes Sync4 infotainment with a 12-inch touchscreen, improved voice recognition, and a 360-degree camera.

Other standard features include Trail Control (sort of like off-road cruise control), One-Pedal Driving (all you need to do is depress or lift the gas pedal while driving slowly off-road), and Trail Turn Assist (which helps the Bronco Raptor make tighter slow-speed turns on the dirt by braking an inside wheel).

Options include Code Orange seatbelts and a Lux Package that includes adaptive cruise control and a 10-speaker audio system from Bang & Olufsen.

Adding the $1,495 destination fee to the Bronco Raptor’s estimated base price brings the estimated total to $71,495. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to $1,285 per month. See 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor models for sale

2022 Ford Bronco Raptor includes:

  • Twin-turbo EcoBoost 3.0-liter V6 – Ford hasn’t told us how much horsepower this engine will make, but the goal is “more than 400.” That should be enough.
  • Ford Performance control arms – These lower suspension arms help the Bronco Raptor have 13.0 inches of front wheel travel and 14.0 inches at the rear. That’s 60% and 40% more, respectively, than a Bronco base model.
  • BFGoodrich K02 all-terrain tires – These 37-inch tires, on 17-in bead-lock rims, are the largest tires on any production SUV in the U.S.

FAQ

  • What is the best 2022 Ford Bronco trim?

The Big Bend trim has the best balance of off-road capability, standard and available features, and affordable pricing. It’s the best value in the Bronco lineup for most drivers.

The base 4-cylinder engine gets up to 20 city/21 highway mpg, and the optional V6 gets up to 19 city/20 highway mpg. Upgrading to the Black Diamond trim, Badlands trim, or Sasquatch Package results in a slight fuel economy penalty.
