The full-size 2022 Ford Expedition goes toe-to-toe with its archrivals, the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban. Ford ups its game this year with an expanded model range, more features, and higher horsepower and tow ratings. Yet, despite all the changes and updates, the 2022 Ford Expedition’s pricing is slightly lower than its 2021 counterpart.
The Expedition comes in two sizes, both offering seating for up to eight people, but the longer Expedition MAX provides more cargo space behind the third-row seat. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with 4-wheel-drive available across all trims.
For 2022, two models join the Expedition lineup. The Timberline is a genuine off-road capable SUV with parts borrowed from the F-150 Raptor, while the Stealth Performance Edition turns the big Ford SUV into a 440-horsepower monster.
2022 Ford Expedition XL STX (starting at $51,080)
The 2022 Ford Expedition XL STX starts at $51,080.
The entry-level Expedition XL STX is a five-passenger SUV with massive cargo space, plenty of standard equipment, and handsome new styling. Moving up to the XL STX MAX adds a third-row seat, but otherwise, the two are identically equipped.
Powering the XL STX is Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine. It makes 375 horsepower and is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission powering the rear wheels. Opting for 4-wheel drive (4WD) adds another $3,050 to the bottom line and includes a one-speed transfer case and a terrain management system.
From the outside, it’s hard to tell the XL STX is an entry-level model. It touts 18-inch alloy wheels, body-colored door handles and bumpers, black roof rack side rails and side step running boards, plus a Class IV trailer hitch receiver.
Power-adjustable heated side mirrors with approach lamps come standard, as do headlight-activated variable intermittent front wipers, a rear wiper/washer, a built-in flip-up rear liftgate window, rear privacy glass, and halogen fog lights.
A push-button remote key fob operates the XL STX’s door locks but does contain a transmitter allowing the push-button start to operate once you enter the vehicle. The key fob also includes a remote start feature.
Cloth seats are standard and include a second-row 40/20/40 split-bench seat and center slide. The driver enjoys an 8-way power seat with 2-way power lumbar support, but the passenger must get by with a manually operated seat that slides fore and aft, plus reclines.
Standard convenience features for the XL STX include a leather-wrapped tilt/telescopic steering wheel with button controls for the cruise, Bluetooth, and audio. Dual-zone automatic climate control with auxiliary rear-seat controls keeps everyone comfortable. At the same time, little perks like the sliding sun visors with illuminated vanity mirrors go unnoticed until needed.
Ford’s new SYNC 4 infotainment features faster response times and better screen graphics and comes loaded into a new 12-inch touch screen with swipe capability and enhanced voice recognition software. An AM/FM stereo with six speakers is standard, as is Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. However, buyers looking for SiriusXM satellite radio will need to move up the XLT trim or stream it via a smartphone.
Ford’s connected AppLink suite and 911-assist, along with a digital owner’s manual, are all standard. When signed up for the subscription-based FordPass Connect, Ford includes a 90-day free trial to Connected Navigation.
The Expedition XL STX includes two USB charging ports in the front console and two more in the second row (one Type A and one Type C, each), plus four 12-volt outlets with two located in the front row, one in the second row, and one in the cargo bay.
STX includes full airbag coverage with front, front side-impact, and full-length side curtain airbags on the safety front.
Ford’s Co-Pilot360 brings a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, forward collision warning, and autonomous emergency braking. Also included are automatic high-beam headlights, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, a rearview monitor, and rear parking sensors.
Hill-start assist, trailer sway control, individual tire pressure monitoring, and a rear-seat occupant reminder system round out the Expedition XL STX’s major safety systems.
Options for the STX are limited to a Heavy Duty Trailer Tow Package that adds an integrated trailer brake controller, Pro Trailer Backup Assist (controls steering while backing up to a trailer hitch), a digital rearview camera, and reverse brake assist. 4WD models include a two-speed transfer case with neutral towing capability.
4WD-equipped models can also upgrade to an electronic limited-slip rear differential.
With the $1,695 destination fee, the 2022 Ford Expedition XL STX costs $51,590. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the STX’s monthly payment comes to about $948. See 2022 Ford Expedition XL STX models for sale

To distinguish the Timberline from the other Expedition trims, Ford gives it an exclusive exterior and interior color palette, as well as 18-inch ebony alloy wheels wrapped in P265/70R18 all-terrain tires.
