2022 Ford Ranger: Choosing the Right Trim

Although there has been a lot of buzz about big changes for the 2022 Ford Ranger, it appears we’ll have to wait a while – maybe even until 2023.

In the meantime, Ranger is returning without any substantive enhancements or additions.

Probably the biggest news is the reintroduction of the Splash Package for 2022. Ford dusted off this popular appearance package from the 1990s, updated it, and now offers it on SuperCrew versions of the XLT and Lariat trims.

With a price tag of $1,495, the Splash Package includes body-side orange-and-black graphics, 18-inch wheels finished in matte black, orange grille nostrils, and gloss black trim.

Inside will be unique seats with orange contrast stitching and unique carbon grain with tuxedo stripes. They will be leather-trimmed in Lariat.

Ford will offer that package year-round. However, it promises a steady flow of limited-edition Splash versions in assorted colors throughout the year.

We like Ranger for its class-leading payload capacity, well-executed cabin, beefy engine, and impressive list of driver aids.

Ford continues to offer Ranger in SuperCab and SuperCrew Cab. Returning are the XL, XLT, and Lariat grades.

Power & Fuel Economy

Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard, but 4-wheel drive (4WD) is optional on all three trim levels. To add 4WD to XL models will cost you $3,855. However, for XLT and Lariat, the price is $3,700.

Under the hood of every Ranger is a 270-horsepower 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. A 10-speed automatic transmission ushers engine production to the wheels.

The government-estimated fuel economy for RWD models is 21 mpg city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg in combined driving. Adding 4WD barely moves the needle at 20 mpg/24 mpg/22 mpg.

Opt for the Tremor off-road trim on SuperCrew versions of the XLT or Lariat, and your mileage will be 19 mpg across the board.

The Ranger SuperCrew 4WD can tow up to 7,500 pounds with a maximum payload capacity of 1,560 lbs.
