2022 Honda Civic: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2022 Honda Civic is new from the ground up. With so many new standard features, it almost parallels the EX trim of just a few years ago. Value remains a Civic strongpoint, with a price tag most buyers won’t mind.

One thing that remains unchanged is Honda’s penchant for bundling popular equipment by trim. So, for example, if you want a power moonroof, you have to move to the EX. Desire rear cross-traffic alert? You’ll need to go all the way to the top Touring trim to get it. The same goes for a premium sound system and fully digital instrument cluster.

Still, the Civic offers strong resale values, extraordinary safety measures, and near bulletproof reliability in a roomy sedan or hatchback competitively priced against most rivals. The 2022 Honda Civic is available as a sedan or a hatchback, in trim levels that line up close but not exactly at the higher levels.

You can get a Civic with a 158-horsepower 2.0-liter inline-4 engine or a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with 180. Although almost all 2022 Honda Civic models are equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), you can get a Civic hatchback in Sport and Touring trims with a 6-speed manual.

Sedan or hatchback, the new 2022 Honda Civic impresses. The unibody chassis has a light, but rigid feel, and the low front cowl and thin windshield pillars create an outstanding forward view reminiscent of earlier Civics. Just as important, this compact front-wheel-drive sedan (or hatchback) remains a delight to drive, and it carries on the Civic tradition of blending excellent fuel efficiency and practicality with entertaining driving manners and expected Honda quality.

Not only that, but an all-new Civic Si arrives in late 2021. Based on the Civic sedan, the sporty new 2022 Si is powered by a 200-horsepower version of the 1.5-liter engine that mates to a 6-speed manual transmission with automatic rev-matching and a helical limited-slip differential. In addition to bigger brakes front and rear, the new Si profits from significantly firmer springs and heavier bushings.  See 2022 Honda Civic for sale

2022 Honda Civic LX
(Sedan: $21,900, Hatchback: $22,900)

As the entry-level trim, the LX is the most affordable Civic, but Honda didn’t skimp on features. Even with its low base price, buyers will still enjoy power operation of the side mirrors, windows, and door locks.

Adaptive cruise control, part of the Honda Sensing suite of driver assists, is also standard. The suite also comes with Traffic Jam Assist, auto high-beam headlights, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and road departure mitigation.

The steering wheel tilts and telescopes, and includes controls for Bluetooth, the adaptive cruise control, and the instrument cluster display screen. The LX’s 7-inch LCD instrument cluster is part analog and part digital, similar to that found in the Honda Accord.

Exterior lighting, including the headlights and taillights, is illuminated with LEDs.

The LX features 10 airbags, including a new generation front airbag designed to lessen the danger of neck and brain injuries. It also has a Civic first — rear-seat side airbags.

The most impressive upgrade is the Civic LX’s new infotainment system. It features a 7-inch touchscreen with a rearview camera display plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Power for the LX comes from a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinder good for 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. The only transmission is a CVT automatic with Step-Shift programming that simulates actual gear changes.

The Civic LX hatchback has 24.5 cubic feet of cargo room behind its 60/40 split-folding rear seat. The Civic LX sedan has a 14.8 cubic foot trunk.

Adding the $1,015 destination fee to the Civic LX sedan, the base price totals $22,915. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to a monthly payment of $412.

The 2022 Honda Civic LX hatchback, with a total price of $23,915 and the same financing terms, would have a monthly payment of $430. See 2022 Honda Civic LX for sale

2022 Honda Civic LX includes:

  • Adaptive cruise control – allows the Civic to maintain a safe distance between itself and the traffic ahead, slowing when necessary and then resuming speed.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – Allows wireless smartphone integration with the Civic’s infotainment system, permitting access to messages, music apps, maps, and more.
  • Automatic climate control – maintains interior comfort without the need for constant temperature and fan adjustment.
  • Collision-mitigation braking – can detect when a collision is imminent and, in certain low-speed situations, slow or stop the vehicle without driver input.

2022 Honda Civic Sport
(Sedan: $23,300, Hatchback: $24,100)

Although the Sport uses the same 2.0-liter engine and suspension as the LX, it has a sportier demeanor that includes a driver-selectable Sport mode, 18-inch black alloy wheels, 235/40R-18 tires, and blacked-out exterior trim.

The Civic Sport also has a chrome exhaust finisher, together with an 8-speaker audio system, a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, paddle shifters for the CVT, and grippy seat fabric.

Note: The Sport version of the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback can be equipped with a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission or the CVT.

Adding the $1,015 destination fee to the Civic Sport sedan’s base price totals $24,315. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to a monthly payment of $437.

The 2022 Honda Civic Sport hatchback, with a total price of $25,115 and the same financing terms, would have a monthly payment of $451.

2022 Honda Civic Sport includes:

  • 18-inch black alloy wheels – give a sporty appearance while improving ride and handling.
  • Sport mode – along with Normal and Eco, Sport mode allows the driver to fine-tune throttle management and shift points for better performance. It also changes the cluster meter lighting to red.
  • 6-speed manual transmission – available only on the Sport version of the hatchback (and not the sedan), the slick-shifting manual adds tremendous sporty flair to the Civic.

2022 Honda Civic EX
(Sedan: $24,900, Hatchback EX-L: $26,600)

The EX trim moves the Civic into a more luxurious realm. Details are not yet available, but we suspect the EX will include things like a power driver’s seat, power sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, and heated seats and side mirrors.

We know the EX will share the Touring’s more powerful 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, which now has VTEC on the exhaust side. The turbo puts out 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque on regular gasoline. A Blind-spot monitoring system is also standard on EX and Touring models.

The Civic hatchback in EX-L trim is equipped similarly, but adds standard leather upholstery. It is not available with a manual transmission.

Adding the $1,015 destination fee to the Civic EX sedan’s base price totals $25,915. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to a monthly payment of $466.

The 2022 Honda Civic EX-L hatchback, with a total price of $27,615 and the same financing terms, would have a monthly payment of $496.

2022 Honda Civic EX includes:

  • Blind-spot monitoring – provides warnings to the driver when vehicles are in or approaching the driver’s blind spots.
  • 1.5-liter turbocharged engine – with 180 horsepower, this engine delivers better power for passing and merging, yet fuel economy figures are better than the less-powerful 2.0-liter base engine.
  • Leather upholstery – the Civic hatchback, in EX-L form,  gets standard leather seat upholstery.

2022 Honda Civic Touring
(Sedan: $28,500, Hatchback Sport Touring: $29,400)

The Touring trim takes all that’s right about the EX, including its 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and blind-spot monitoring system, and builds an even better compact cruiser by tossing in leather upholstery, power front seats, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Touring gets a larger 10.2-inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster. The cluster is fully customizable, allowing the driver to display traditional round gauges with needles or digital bar graphs for speed and rpm.

In addition to a larger 9-inch infotainment screen with built-in navigation, the Civic Touring gets a 12-speaker Bose Centerpoint 2 audio system and a Qi wireless charging pad. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is low-speed braking control, which applies the brakes automatically if it senses a forward or rearward collision at slow parking lot speeds.

As the top 2022 Honda Civic hatchback, the Sport Touring model is equipped very much much like the Touring sedan. But it’s also equipped with machine-finished 18-inch alloy wheels and an available 6-speed manual transmission.

Adding the $1,015 destination fee to the Civic Touring sedan’s base price totals $29,515. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to a monthly payment of $530.

The 2022 Honda Civic Sport Touring hatchback, with a total price of $30,415 and the same financing terms, would have a monthly payment of $547.

2022 Honda Civic Touring includes:

  • 10.2-inch digital cluster – this fully digital cluster replicates the look of an analog speedometer and tach and provides displays for various functions like music selection, navigation, and a trip computer.
  • 9-inch touchscreen – a larger 9-inch touchscreen incorporates faster response times, an easy-to-use menu, and physical hard buttons for easier control. It also includes navigation.
  • Qi wireless charge pad – no more nasty wires to get in your way. Simply place your smartphone on the Qi wireless charging pad, and the battery will recharge.
  • Rear cross-traffic alert – monitors cross traffic at the vehicle’s rear bumper and warns the driver of vehicles that may be approaching from the right or left.
  • 6-speed manual transmission – if you want the most luxurious Civic but demand a manual transmission, a great 6-speed is a no-cost option in the Civic hatchback Sport Touring model.

    2022 Honda Civic Si
    (starting at $27,300)

The new Honda Civic Si, which arrives in late 2021 as a 2022 model, is available only as a sedan. As such, it’s built alongside the other Civic sedans in Alliston, Ontario, Canada. But it’s significantly sportier than any other current Civic, owing to its turbocharged 200-horsepower 1.5-liter engine, 6-speed manual gearbox, and sport-tuned chassis with extra-large brakes.

Just how “sport-tuned” is the Si chassis? Consider this: Its front springs are 8% stiffer than those of the standard Civic sedan, but its rears are some 60% heavier, with commensurately sportier shock absorbers. What’s more, the new Si has a helical limited-slip differential to help put the power down out of corners, and big-bolstered seats help to keep the driver in place when the g-forces are high.

The Si interior, with sport pedals and red contrast stitching, features a 7-inch instrument panel with a digital tachometer and a physical speedometer. Various drive modes include an Individual setting that allows the driver to select engine response, steering effort, and even the colors that appear in the instrument panel.

One final point: The Si’s 6-speed manual transmission, with short throws and a stiffened linkage, now has a rev-matching feature. In Sport mode, it automatically “blips” the throttle for smoother rev-matched downshifts, which smooths the car’s deceleration and makes it sound like you really know how to drive. Grippy summer tires are optional.

Adding the $1,015 destination fee to the base price for the Civic Si works out to a total of $28,315. With no money down, financing that amount for 60 months at 3% interest represents a monthly payment of about $509. See 2022 Honda Civic Si for sale

    2022 Honda Civic Si includes:

    • Turbocharged engine – the Si’s 1.5-liter puts out an even 200 horsepower from 6,000 rpm to the 6,500-rpm redline. The torque peak of 192 lb-ft is reached at only 1,800 rpm.
    • Sport seats – the Si has unique sport seats with attached headrests and large side bolstering. The bottom cushion is raised in front for added leg support on long trips.
    • Drive modes – you have your choice of Normal, Sport, or Individual drive modes in the new Si, which also has standard wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
    • Bose Premium Audio – this outstanding sound system has 12 speakers, including a subwoofer. And we’re happy to report it has a traditional volume knob.
    • 6-speed manual transmission – with precise linkage and a neat rev-matching feature in Sport mode, what’s there not to like about the Civic Si’s standard (and exclusive) manual gearbox?
