2022 Honda Passport: Choosing the Right Trim

A few notable changes accompany the returning 2022 Honda Passport. First, Honda has beefed up the front end with a bolder, squared-off grille and more pronounced cladding. Second, Honda has shaken up the trim-level hierarchy by ditching the Sport and Touring grades but adding the new TrailSport trim.

As the dust settles from the trim-level rearrangement, Passport is left with EX-L, TrailSport, and Elite grades.

Historically, we have liked the 2-row Passport. We appreciate its available all-wheel drive (AWD), the bundle of standard driver aids, and generous passenger and cargo room. To that list, we can now add its no-nonsense face.

This Honda faces off against rivals like Nissan Murano, Toyota 4Runner, and Chevy Blazer.

The Passport rests on a front-wheel-drive (FWD) architecture. AWD is a $2,100 option on the entry-level EX-L trim, but standard on the two upper trims.

The AWD system is Honda’s Intelligent Variable Torque Management. It senses the amount of torque required at each wheel, divvying up the engine power accordingly. With AWD, the Passport can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Closely related to the 3-row Honda Pilot, Passport sources its thrust from a 280-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine. A 9-speed automatic transmission transfers engine torque to the wheels.

According to government estimates, with FWD the fuel economy is 20 miles per gallon city, 25 mpg highway, and 22 mpg in combined driving. With AWD all the numbers drop by 1 mpg.

Heated power outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel, and tri-zone automatic climate control are also standard.

Leather-trimmed seating, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a 4-way power-adjustable passenger seat are standard.

Within the infotainment system are an 8-inch touchscreen, a 7-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, three USB ports, and three 12-volt power ports.

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SMS text messaging, satellite-radio capability, and a wireless phone charger are standard.

Among the driver aids are forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and road-departure warning with steering assist. Lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front-rear park assist, and high-beam assist are also standard.

Other than AWD, Honda doesn’t offer any factory-installed options on Passport.

Adding the $1,225 destination fee to the EX-L base price brings the total to $39,095. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to $702 per month. See 2022 Honda Passport EX-L models for sale

2022 Honda Passport EX-L includes:

  • LED exterior lighting – This includes headlights with auto on-off, taillights, and daytime running lights (DRLs). LEDs illuminate a wider and longer area than regular incandescent lights. That means they are also easier for other drivers to see.
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control – Separating the vehicle into three areas (front right, front left, and rear), it allows setting the temperatures in each. It then automatically maintains those preset temperatures.
  • Driver aids – These include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

2022 Honda Passport TrailSport (starting at $42,470)

A 115-volt power outlet and orange contrast stitching on the steering wheel and seats are also included.

Adding the $1,225 destination fee to the TrailSport base price equals $43,695. If you put no money down and financed for 60 months at 3% interest, it would work out to $785 per month. See 2022 Honda Passport TrailSport models for sale

  • Rain-sensing wipers – When the system senses moisture on the windshield, it automatically engages the wipers. The wiper speed adjusts according to the volume of the rain.
  • Auto-dimming outboard mirrors – Using photosensors, they recognize bright headlights closing from behind. They then automatically dim the reflection of those lights. The interior rearview mirror is also auto-dimming.
  • Hands-free power liftgate – With the key fob on your person, simply stick your foot under the rear bumper. The liftgate automatically opens.

FAQ

  • What is the best 2022 Honda Passport trim?

The entry-level EX-L trim is a solid value. If you want AWD, you may add it. Otherwise, the EX-L has plenty of convenience, infotainment, and safety features for the price.

  • How many miles per gallon does the 2022 Honda Passport get?

With front-wheel drive (FWD), the government estimates are 20 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 22 mpg in combined driving. With AWD, each number drops by 1 mpg.

  • Which 2022 Honda Passport trim level offers the most safety?

Every 2022 Passport comes with forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and road-departure warning with steering assist. Lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front/rear park assist, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam assist are also standard. Basically, each Passport trim level is as safe as the others. If you consider AWD a safety factor, then adding it to the EX-L once again brings it even with the upper grades.
