The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the first model from Hyundai’s all-electric Ioniq sub-brand. It’s an all-electric compact SUV, about the same size as a Tucson. It’s set to compete with vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
In rear-wheel-drive form with the 77.4-kWh battery pack, the Ioniq 5 has a maximum range of 303 miles. In addition, Hyundai says you can get from 10% charge to 80% in 18 minutes, and add 68 miles of range in five minutes. That’s one of the fastest charging times of any vehicle on the market.
The Ioniq 5 is bullish when it comes to its range and charge times. It also stands out when it comes to styling. It has a wide, low stance and retro lines that resemble an oversized ’80s hot hatch. (The design pays homage to the Hyundai Pony, the company’s first mass-produced car.) There’s even a dash of that modern retro feel in the back of the vehicle. Check out the pixel-style accents in the taillights and under the charger door.
The Ioniq 5 is based on Hyundai’s E-GMP (electric global modular platform), which is designed to charge on an 800-volt (greater than 250-kW) charger. It’s also backward compatible with a 150-kW charger, as well as AC Level 2 charging. This platform can work with a variety of wheelbases, lengths, and ground clearances, so we expect it to underpin a wide range of models. The Ioniq 5 version of this platform uses short overhangs and a long wheelbase – 4 inches longer than that of the midsize Palisade SUV — which makes the interior spacious while keeping overall dimensions tidy.
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, on sale in late December of 2021, has a 77.4-kWh battery pack. The model is available with rear- or all-wheel-drive model. With RWD, the single electric motor produces 225 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. EPA range is an impressive 303 miles.
With AWD and the same battery pack, the Ioniq 5 has an extra motor, in front. The combined output of the two motors is 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque, the most of the latter you’ll find in any Hyundai. EPA range of this model is a respectable 256 miles.
The Ioniq 5 RWD is estimated to go from 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds; the AWD model scoots to 60 mph in about 5 seconds.
Inside, the Ioniq 5 has a clean, open layout. Unique features include a magnetic dashboard, a center console that can slide back and forth up to 5.5 inches, and a dual 12-inch horizontally mounted display. Hyundai used sustainable materials throughout the cabin. The armrest and seats are made from recycled plastic bottles. The headliner and carpet are made from material extracted from sugar cane. There is also recyclable fiber in the door panels.
When the Ioniq 5 goes on sale in late December, the rollout will start in 10 zero-emissions vehicle states (California and the Northeast), then will expand into Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, and Texas. There will be a wider rollout in 2022.
In the spring, an Ioniq 5 SE with a smaller (58 kWh) battery will start to be sold. Complete details have not been announced for this model yet, but we do know this: It will be a rear-drive vehicle with a 168-horsepower motor, an EPA range of 220 miles, and a starting price of $39,700 (before a possible federal electric vehicle tax credit of $7,500).
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is built in Ulsan, South Korea. Production of the larger-battery models starts first, then followed later by the models with the 58-kWh battery pack.
There are three trim levels: SE, SEL, and Limited. All models with the larger 77.4-kWh battery pack are available with RWD or AWD. The upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 with the standard 58-kWh battery is exclusively RWD. Find a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 for sale
