The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) carries over from the previous year without any updates.
Although roughly three dozen PHEVs are available today, the Ioniq PHEV is one of just a few non-luxury cars. A notable exception, of course, is the highly successful Toyota Prius Prime.
In this one-on-one contest, the Ioniq PHEV has an advantage over the Prius Prime in the electric-only range (29 miles to 25 miles) and base price (2021: $26,700 to $28,220).
The Prius Prime has a slight advantage in mileage and interior space, offering a total range up to 640 miles and more than 140 cubic feet of passenger and cargo volume (compared to 620 miles and just about 120 cubic feet in the Ioniq).
Very few people will find the Ioniq overly exciting. It’s basically an affordable everyday driver for those who want a reliable lorry with solid fuel economy. It isn’t available in every state.
Furnished for five, the Ioniq’s rear seat is tight for anyone, save small children. This, however, is about the only area where we might accuse the Ioniq of falling short.
As are most things Hyundai, it offers plenty of value as well as that outstanding 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Every Ioniq PHEV sources its power from a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine mated to a 44.5-kW electric motor. This duo is good for a combined 156 horsepower and 109 lb-ft of torque.
Power reaches the front wheels by way of a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The EPA has a special formula for setting miles-per-gallon estimates for vehicles with some degree of electric-only power. For the Ioniq PHEV, it’s 119 MPGe (miles-per-gallon equivalent).
On gasoline only, the traditional numbers are 52 mpg in the city, 51 mpg on the highway, and 51 mpg in combined driving.
Hyundai offers the Ioniq PHEV in three trim levels: SE, SEL, and Limited.
2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid SE (Starting at $26,800)
Even its entry-level trim comes pretty well stocked with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lights (headlights with auto on/off, taillights, and daytime running lights), and heated outboard mirrors.
Among the other standard gear are dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and cruise control.
Its infotainment system includes an 8-inch touchscreen, hands-free Bluetooth, USB, 6-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
On the list of standard driver aids are forward-collision warning with emergency braking with pedestrian-cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, and driver-warning assist.
Also included in the base price are auto high-beam assist, adaptive cruise control, and Blue Link.
To add content, you must basically move up to a higher grade. It offers a few dealer-installed accessories, but no option packages.
We believe the SE is the best deal and best value among the three trim levels. We don’t think the bump in standard features in the SEL warrants the jump in price.
Adding the $1,005 destination fee to the estimated SE base price totals $27,805. With no money down, financing that amount for 60 months at 3% interest works out to a monthly payment of $500. Find a Hyundai Plug-In Hybrid SE for sale. Find a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid SE for sale
2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid SE Includes:
- Dual-zone automatic climate control – A set-it-and-forget-it system, it provides separate temperature settings for the right and left zones of the cabin. Once set, the system automatically maintains those settings.
- Auto high-beam assist – Using a forward-facing camera, this system monitors oncoming headlights and taillights. It automatically engages the high beams when there is no traffic ahead, disengaging them when there is.
- Blue Link – Allows a smartphone to interface with your Hyundai. It can lock/unlock the doors, remote start, locate your Hyundai, and more.
2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid SEL (Starting at $29,800)
The SEL builds on the SE standard content with upgraded cloth seating, 10-way power driver’s seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and integrated turn-signal indicators in the outboard mirrors.
Wireless device charging, 7-inch LCD instrument cluster, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert are also included in the SEL base price.
Adding the $1,005 destination fee to the SEL base price equals $30,805. Financing that amount with no money down for 60 months at 3% interest works out to a monthly payment of $554. Find a Hyundai Plug-In Hybrid SEL for sale. Find a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid SEL for sale
