Hyundai is expanding its electric footprint with the new 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-In Hybrid, joining the Santa Fe Hybrid (HEV) in the lineup.
With its new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Santa Fe, Hyundai claims territory occupied by few rivals.
Among its competitors are PHEV versions of the Subaru Crosstrek, Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4, Volvo XC40, and the new Mitsubishi Outlander. Only the Outlander PHEV matches the Santa Fe in size.
Although a few noticeable exterior styling cues set the PHEV apart from other Santa Fe versions, by and large, the PHEV shares its exterior wrapper and cabin with the rest of the lineup.
Generating the thrust, a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine collaborates with an electric motor. Jointly, they produce 261 horsepower.
A 6-speed automatic transmission hustles output to all four wheels (AWD). It uses the same mechanical AWD system in other Santa Fe models rather than attaching an electric motor to the rear axle.
Its electric-only range is expected to be 30 miles. Other rival PHEVs do better. The RAV4, for example, is good for 42 miles. However, it is far better than the Crosstrek’s 17 miles.
The government has a formula for judging a vehicle’s fuel economy that can operate on battery power alone. It’s called miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe), and it estimates the Santa Fe PHEV at 77 MPGe. This is less than Crosstrek’s 90 MPGe.
When driving in hybrid mode using a combination of battery and gasoline, the mileage is 33 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 33 mpg in combined driving.
