The 2022 Jeep Gladiator takes most of what we love about the Jeep Wrangler and morphs into an off-road pickup truck. The 5-foot bed is just slightly smaller than what many crew-cab pickups offer, and with the tailgate down, it can fit dirt bikes and other off-road toys, as well as serve as a spot to roll out a sleeping bag and call it a night.
Like the Wrangler, the Gladiator features several removable roof options, and removable full or partial doors, and a fold-flat windshield. Unlike the Wrangler, the Gladiator doesn’t get a plug-in hybrid or 4-cylinder turbocharged engine option, just the tried and true 3.6-liter V6 and optional 3.0-liter EcoDiesel turbodiesel.
2022 Jeep Gladiator Sport (starting at $35,610)
The 2022 Jeep Gladiator Sport starts at $35,610.
As is the case for almost all Gladiator trims, the Sport comes with a 3.6-liter V6 and 6-speed manual transmission. It’s then paired with Jeep’s Command-Trac part-time 4-wheel- drive system. An optional EcoDiesel 3.0-liter is available and can only pair with an 8-speed automatic that is optional on the gas V6.
Mechanically, the Sport features heavy-duty Dana 44 front and rear axles with conventional differentials. It touts heavy-duty brakes, a Class II bumper hitch, and skid plate protection for the transfer case and 22-gallon fuel tank. Front and rear tow hooks, heavy-duty shocks, an engine oil cooler, and a 7- and 4-pin wiring harness also come standard.
A Sunrider soft-top covers the Sport’s cabin with removable windows and solid steel doors with manually-operated glass windows. Attached to those doors are manual driver and passenger side mirrors and manual key-operated door locks. The Sport does include a key fob that enables the push-button start, so it’s not entirely trapped in the 20th-century.
The Sport rides on all-season tires surrounding 17-inch steel wheels, with a full-size spare that mounts below the truck bed. Halogen headlights and fog lights are included with the Sport, as are variable intermittent wipers.
The Sport’s cabin features cloth bucket seats and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. The steering tilts and telescopes and features controls for the audio, cruise, and Bluetooth.
Standard amenities include manual air conditioning and an 8-speaker sound system connected to a new 7-inch touchscreen and Uconnect 4, which means Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard. A media hub hosts two USB ports and an auxiliary input jack.
The Gladiator Sport includes front and front-seat side-mounted airbags, electronic traction and stability control, roll mitigation, trailer sway control, hill start assist, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a rear backup camera. For 2022, the Gladiator Sport has also gained a remote proximity key and a new cabin air filter that removes 95 percent of all particles.
Options for the Gladiator Sport include half doors with base or premium uppers, the Freedom Top 3-piece hardtop roof, soft or hard tonneau covers for the bed, side steps, and a spray-in bedliner.
Interior upgrades include black perforated or stitched leather seating, SiriusXM satellite radio, and remote proximity keyless entry.
A limited-slip rear differential, 4:10 axle ratio, and a cold air intake system all help performance.
Option packages for the Sport include the Auxiliary Switch Group that adds a 240-amp alternator, a 700-amp battery, and four programmable switches. The Trailer Tow Package brings a Class IV receiver hitch, heavy-duty engine cooling while Trailer-Hitch Zoom can project a 4x zoom mode image of the trailer hitch on the touch screen to assist when hooking up a trailer.
The Max Tow Package adds a 4:10 rear axle, heavy-duty brakes, limited-slip rear differential, heavy-duty Dana 44 wide front and rear axles, heavy-duty engine cooling, Trailer Hitch Zoom, and a 6,250-lb tow rating.
With the $1,595 destination charge, the 2022 Jeep Gladiator Sport costs $37,205. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $669. See 2022 Jeep Gladiator Sport models for sale
