With a few slight tweaks, the 2022 Jeep Renegade returns to anchor the Jeep brand. It may be the smallest entry in the Jeep lineup, but it doesn’t lack any of the brand’s get-it-done attitude.
When first introduced, much was made of its ties to Fiat. However, take a run through a piece of wilderness in its Trailhawk grade and the last thing popping into your head will be Fiat.
In fact, we consider Renegade the most off-road worthy of subcompact SUV/crossovers. Moreover, we like its traditional Jeep styling and up-to-date technology.
We also appreciate its suite of driver aids, standard across all trim levels.
Its rivals include the Honda HR-V, Nissan Rogue Sport, and Chevy Trax.
Jeep offers Renegade in four grades: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk.
We are happy to note Jeep decided to deep-six the short-of-breath 2.4-liter 4-cylinder that powered the lower grades for 2021.
Every Renegade will now draw its thrust from the 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder standard in the upper trims last year. A 9-speed automatic transmission still distributes engine production to the wheels.
Only the Sport claims front-wheel drive (FWD) as standard. Adding all-wheel drive (AWD) will set you back $1,600. Every other grade provides AWD as standard equipment.
With AWD comes Selec-Terrain with settings for snow, sand, and mud.
EPA fuel economy for the Sport FWD is 24 miles per gallon city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg in combined driving.
Those numbers drop slightly to 23 mpg city/29 mpg highway/26 mpg combined with AWD, except for the Trailhawk — it’s rated at 22 mpg city/27 mpg highway/24 mpg combined.
