2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is the ultimate off-roader, although the new Ford Bronco is making a run at the American icon. Still, the 4-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has as many admirers as it does platitudes, which is why Jeep continues to sell every one they build.

In a nod to ultimate freedom, the Wrangler Unlimited offers no less than 11 different trims, ranging from a basic but affordable off-road-ready SUV to a Rubicon-tackling titan aptly named the Rubicon.

Jeep also offers two 4×4 systems and four engine choices: a diesel, a mild-hybrid V6, a turbocharged 4-cylinder, and a Hemi V8. There’s also a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which we’ve covered separately.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport (starting at $33,225)

2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport driving

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport is now available, starting at $33,225.

The first rung in the Wrangle Unlimited ladder is the humble Sport. As with the other trims, there are multiple packages and specialty names within the leading trim. In the Sport’s case, this family includes the Willys Sport, Sport S, Willys, and Sport Altitude.

The Sport’s standard engine is a 285-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. An 8-speed automatic is optional, as is a 270-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, 3.6-liter mild hybrid, and a 260-hp 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel.

The Sport comes with Jeep’s Command-Trac 2-speed part-time 4WD system, a Dana solid front axle, and a heavy-duty Dana 44 rear axle. It has skid plate protection for the transmission, transfer case, and fuel tank, plus 17-inch steel wheels, an engine oil cooler, and three tow hooks (two front and one rear).

The Wrangler Unlimited Sport includes four full steel doors with manual windows, manual door locks, manual exterior mirrors, halogen headlights, and fog lights. The Sunrider zipperless soft top makes it easy to convert to a full open-air mode. Buyers can substitute an optional 3-piece Freedom top hardtop. They can also opt to replace the full metal doors with half doors with plastic zip-out windows. The Wrangler Unlimited offers the ability to remove the doors and fold the windshield flat, making for a unique driving experience.

The Sport features manually adjustable cloth bucket seats with manual driver’s side lumbar support. The rear seats fold in a 60/40 split configuration. The rest of the Sport’s interior is pretty basic. Still, it does include such conveniences as air conditioning, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel with touch controls, a push-button starter, cruise control, and front-seat area carpet.

In-car entertainment is covered by an 8-speaker audio system and Jeep’s Uconnect 3 with a 5-inch display. The system supports SiriusXM satellite (an optional upgrade), streaming Bluetooth, and auxiliary and USB input.

Safety systems for the Sport include front and front-seat side-mounted airbags, electronic traction and stability control, electronic roll mitigation, hill start assist, trailer sway damping, a tire-pressure monitor, and a rear backup camera.

There are numerous options for the Wrangler Unlimited Sport, a few of which we’ve already mentioned. Beyond engines, hardtops, and half doors, buyers can opt for a limited-slip rear differential, proximity key fob keyless entry, and numerous soft-top front panel designs for the hardtop.

The Trailer Tow and Heavy Duty Electric Group add a Class II trailer hitch, 7- and 4-pin wiring harness, auxiliary switches, a 240-amp alternator, and a 700-amp battery.  Jeep also offers a Corning Gorilla Glass windshield that can withstand hits from rocks and road debris without cracking. Gorilla Glass is the same material used on most smartphone and tablet screens.

There are reams of Mopar accessories ranging from decals and graphics to a satin black grille, a mesh Sunbonnet, and chrome tube steps.

With the $1,595 destination fee, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport comes to $34,820. If taking a 60-month loan at 3% with zero down, the monthly payment comes to $626. See 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport models for sale

Electronic disconnecting front sway bar – Electronically disconnects the sway bar ends from the wheels, allowing greater range of motion when tackling uneven terrain.

Uconnect 4 – This advanced touch-screen infotainment system lets you bring your phone apps along for the ride, thanks to its standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
