2022 Land Rover Range Rover Velar: Choosing the Right Trim

The 5-passenger 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Velar is the middle child in the Land Rover lineup. Not as big or powerful as the Range Rover Sport, but not as diminutive as the elegant Evoque. Styling-wise, the Velar splits the difference between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport, presenting a handsome, functional design that is bound to hold up well as the years pass.

Intended to battle the BMW X5, Audi Q5, and Lexus RX, the Velar excels in some areas but falls short in others. Due to its lofty status, some might even cross-shop the Velar against the Porsche Macan and less-expensive Jaguar F-Pace.

The Velar doesn’t offer a hybrid or plug-in model. Still, it does offer up two tempting gasoline engines, the larger of which includes a mild-hybrid system that improves fuel economy while helping reduce emissions. The Velar S and R-Dynamic S derive power from a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 247 horsepower. Both offer the option of a 335-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder mild hybrid.

The top-line R-Dynamic HSE gets a high-output version of the 3.0-liter turbocharged engine good for 395 horsepower.

All-wheel drive comes standard.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Velar S (Starting at $57,200)

A 2.0-liter turbocharged engine powers the entry-level Velar S, but for an additional $6,400, buyers can upgrade to the more potent 3.0-liter mild-hybrid engine. The 3.0-liter engine also brings a coil-spring suspension with Adaptive Dynamics.

Regardless of powertrain, all Velar models come standard with Land Rover’s all-wheel-drive system, including Terrain Response, All-Terrain Progress Control, Low-Traction Launch, and torque vectoring. That’s many fancy names that probably won’t mean much to the average car buyer, so we’ll break it down.

The Velar’s all-wheel-drive system is permanently engaged, meaning you don’t have to shift into 4WD or wait for the wheels to slip before all four wheels come online. Terrain Response is a system that allows the driver to select various modes, such as mud or snow, to optimize the all-wheel drive’s traction.

All-Terrain Progress Control is like cruise control for off-roading. It maintains a set speed while crawling over rocks or through rugged terrain, allowing more novice off-roaders to enjoy the Velar’s full capabilities. Low-Traction Launch helps the Velar pull away from a standstill in adverse conditions, such as when driving in deep snow, gravel, or grass.

Torque Vectoring by Braking is a system that uses the vehicle’s electronic differential and brakes to improve cornering by sending power to the front or rear wheels best able to maintain stability and traction.

Exterior features of the Velar S include 19-inch alloy wheels, auto-dimming power-folding side mirrors with heating elements, LED headlights with automatic high beams, and a power rear liftgate. The Velar’s door handles sit flush with the door, popping out when summoned by pressing a button on the door handle and having the proximity key fob in pocket.

Other notable standard items include rain-sensing wipers, sliding panoramic moonroof, auto-leveling headlights, rear foglights, and various black trim and exterior styling treatments. A Follow Me Home feature leaves the Velar’s headlights on for a short time after shutting off the engine, lighting a path to your door.

The Velar’s interior is a sumptuous place, with a clean, high-tech look heavy on touchscreen technology. A large digital instrument cluster with configurable screens for various display modes is directly in front of the driver. The Velar’s Pivi Pro infotainment system makes using touchscreen technology less complicated, reducing the number of screen taps to one or two to achieve the desired outcome.

Included with PIVI Pro is an 11.4-inch upper touchscreen that provides a home for navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth capabilities for phone and music streaming, plus a rearview camera. Sound reproduction comes courtesy of a 12-speaker, 400-watt Meridian audio system. Two 3.0 USB ports are located up front, along with a 12-volt outlet. Another 12-volt outlet is located in the second row, and a third is in the cargo bay.

Other standard amenities include perforated leather seating, 14-way power front seats with power lumbar support, power tilt/telescopic steering wheel, driver’s seat memory, cruise control with traffic sign recognition and speed limiter, and dual-zone electronic climate control. A lower touchscreen allows easy control of climate, Terrain Response, and audio systems.

The safety and driver-assist list includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and rear cross-traffic detection. The Velar’s Wade Sensing system comes in handy when off-roading through streams or deep water, measuring the water’s depth and displaying an image on the touchscreen monitor. A driver monitor watches for signs of drowsy or inattentive driving, prompting the driver to pay attention.

Optional equipment for the 2022 Land Rover Velar S is mainly bundled into packages, although it boasts a few desirable standalone features. Available add-ons include a 3D surround-view camera, parking assistant, head-up display, Terrain Response 2 with Dynamic Program (that can automatically pick the best setting based on terrain), and adaptive cruise control with steering assist.

The Convenience Pack adds a gesture-activated tailgate, rear-seat remote levers, and the Activity Key bracelet as a wearable key fob. Other features included in various packs include ventilated front seats, heated rear seats with power recline, extended leather interior appointments, and a lockable cooled glovebox. Are you looking for more? How about adding 4-zone climate control, heated steering wheel, heated windshield wipers, and power washers for the headlights.

Music lovers can upgrade to a 17-speaker, 750-watt Meridian audio system, while connectivity junkies can opt for a Wi-Fi hotspot and interactive driver display. Lastly, buyers can purchase 20- and 21-inch wheel upgrades along with a full-size spare tire.

With the $1,150 destination fee, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Velar S sells for $58,350. Add on options, and that price can easily climb into the $70,000 range. Without options, the monthly payment on a 60-month loan at 3% financing and no money down comes to $1,048. See 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Velar S models for sale
