2022 Lexus LS: Choosing the Right Trim

What enhancements the 2022 Lexus LS 500 enjoys are easily overlooked. They are either subtle and under the skin or reserved for specific trims or packages.

Generally, Lexus fidgeted with the suspension to achieve a more comfortable ride. It already felt as if you were gliding around on a marshmallow. We think those changes will be lost on most of us.

Moreover, Lexus says the twin-turbo V6 is even quieter. Again, it was already so quiet you could hear a gnat gasp.

Lexus also updated a few of the driver aids in its Safety System+ 2.5 bundle. Impressive is its pedestrian-detection function that, in certain cases, can detect pedestrians or cyclists in the crosswalk as you are making an intersection turn.

From its launch more than 30 years ago, the LS has always represented smooth, quiet, powerful luxury. Ultimately, it changed the face of large luxury sedans. It has continued to evolve along that trajectory.

Any gripes we do hear about it are that maybe it’s too quiet and plush.

The LS 500 competes with the likes of Audi A8 and Genesis G90.

We like the LS 500 for, well, just about everything. Notable is its well-crafted cabin, library-quiet operation, bullet-proof reliability, and relatively affordable price.

We think it would benefit from a V8 option, but the two current powertrains are efficient and perform well enough.

Lexus offers the LS as the LS 500, LS 500 F Sport, the LS 500h gas-electric hybrid (HEV).

Power & Fuel Economy

Providing go for the LS 500 and F Sport is a 416-horsepower 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. A 10-speed automatic transmission ushers engine output to the rear wheels (RWD) or all the wheels (AWD).

Driver-selectable drive modes include Sport S+ and Custom.

With either powertrain, opting for AWD will set you back $3,250.

According to government estimates, fuel economy with RWD is 18 miles per gallon in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg in combined driving. Opting for AWD reduces the numbers by 1 mpg across the board.

A 3.5-liter V6 combines with two electric motors to propel the LS 500h. The engine and motors collaborate to generate 354 hp.

With RWD, the estimated mileage is 25 mpg city/33 mpg highway/28 mpg combined. Opting for AWD drops the numbers to 23 mpg city/29 mpg highway/26 mpg combined.
