There is some big news for the returning 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Mazda now reserves the automatic transmission for the top-end Grand Touring Trim. All other trims are manual transmission only.
Also, Mazda developed its new Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) technology, providing extra stability during severe cornering. KPC adds a little extra brake pressure to the inside rear wheel during cornering. This suppresses body roll and is standard on all MX-5 grades.
Mazda offers the MX-5 Miata as a soft-top or with a power-folding hardtop (RF).
You can get the soft-top decked out as the Sport, Club, and Grand Touring.
If you opt for the RF, you are restricted to the Club grade with the optional Brembo BBS Recaro Package and Grand Touring.
Arguably, the Miata has no peers. Its size, sportiness, and convertible top are a unique combination in the automotive world.
We like it for its gorgeous lines, snappy manual gearbox, spot-on handling, mileage, and the one-hand operation of its soft-top.
Every Miata sources its thrust from a 181-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. Standard on all but the top-of-the-line Grand Touring is a 6-speed manual transmission spinning the rear wheels.
A 6-speed automatic transmission switches the cogs on the Grand Touring. However, for an extra $500, you can replace the automatic with the 6-speed manual.
According to government estimates, with the manual, Miata gets 26 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg in combined driving. Providing a small improvement, the automatic transmission delivers 26 mpg city/35 mpg highway/30 mpg combined.
2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport (starting at $27,300)
The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport starts at $27,300.
Standard on Sport are 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, LED taillights, air conditioning, and power accessories (windows, door locks, and outboard mirrors).
Also included are cruise control, keyless entry with push-button start, a tilt-telescoping steering wheel, and a 12-volt power port.
Cloth seating, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and two USB ports are also standard.
Within the infotainment system are a 7-inch touchscreen, a 6-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, voice recognition, and SMS text messaging. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also included.
Among the driver aids are forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Mazda doesn’t offer any factory-installed options for the Sport.

2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport includes:
- Keyless entry – If the key fob is on your person, the doors automatically unlock when you touch the door handle. Push-button start is paired with keyless entry.
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – Allows your smartphone to interface with your vehicle. Not only can you access the music on your phone, but you can also send messages, receive messages, make calls, and so forth through your vehicle’s media system.
- Driver aids – They include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club (starting at $30,800)
The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club starts at $30,800.
Club adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a limited-slip differential, a rear lip spoiler, a front air dam, and heated seats.
A 9-speaker Bose audio system with satellite-radio capability is also standard.
Pony up another $4,500 for the Brembo BBS Recaro Package. You gain Brembo front brakes, upgraded wheels, and heated Recaro seats.
The Brembo BBS Recaro Package is included in the $7,400 cost of adding the RF power hardtop to Club models.

2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club includes:
- Limited-slip differential – Mazda uses a gear-based setup to divvy up the amount of torque going to each wheel on the rear axle. Having the two drive wheels spin at different speeds is particularly effective for improving grip when cornering.
- Heated seats – These increase comfort in frigid temperatures.
- Satellite radio – Although you must pay for a subscription, satellite-radio capability provides a wide range of entertainment channels accessible nearly everywhere. Here it’s included with the 9-speaker Bose audio.
2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring (starting at $32,300)
The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring starts at $32,300.
Mazda makes available a 6-speed automatic transmission for the Grand Touring. The upcharge is $500 for the soft-top and $550 for the folding hardtop.
Other standard features include steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, adaptive front lights, high-beam assist, and LED daytime running lights. Mazda also includes auto on-off headlights.
Other upgrades are rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming driver’s-side outboard mirror, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a Homelink transceiver.
Leather seating, a navigation system, and traffic-sign recognition are also standard.
Mazda doesn’t provide any factory-installed option packages for Grand Touring, but you can opt for the power-folding hardtop for $2,700.

2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring includes:
- Rain-sensing wipers – When the system senses moisture on the windshield, it automatically engages the wipers. The wiper speed adjusts according to the volume of the rain.
- Adaptive front lights – These headlights bend in concert with the front wheels to light the way when taking a curve or making a turn.
- Auto-dimming mirrors – Using photosensors, they recognize bright headlights closing from behind. Then they automatically dim the reflection of those lights. They include the driver’s-side outboard and rearview mirrors.
