If you want the maximum Mini for your money, then the 2022 Countryman is the model to go for.
The Countryman is a shade bigger and taller than the otherwise similar Clubman, but loses a little in the fun-to-drive factor versus its crisper-handling stablemate.
On a practical note, the Countryman has a conventional lifting tailgate, which is arguably easier to use than the split opening rear doors on the Clubman.
Bottom line: The Countryman is the sensible shoes choice in the Mini lineup. Not as engaging as the smaller Minis, yet still expensive. However, it does come with a plug-in hybrid version that can appeal to the eco-minded buyer.
2022 Mini Cooper/Cooper S Countryman/All4 Classic (starting at $29,900)
Just roomy enough for 5 passengers, the Mini Cooper Countryman sits on 17-inch alloy wheels. The base Cooper model is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine that develops a meager 134 horsepower. The transmission is a 7-speed automatic.
We strongly recommend stepping up to the Cooper S Classic ($31,900), which uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. That engine produces a much more respectable 189 hp.
On both the Cooper and Cooper S versions of the Countryman, the all-wheel-drive (AWD) All4 variant adds $2,000 to the cost of the different trims (with the exception of the Cooper S All4 Iconic trim, which costs an extra $1,000.
Standard equipment includes an 8.8-inch touch screen, sliding rear bench seat, panoramic moonroof, LED headlights, rear parking distance control, and rearview camera. The Classic trim does not come as standard with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility. Apple CarPlay compatibility is an option on the Signature trim, and standard on the Iconic trim, but Android Auto users are out of luck.
The safety equipment provided is not the most generous compared to mainstream compact SUVs. Standard are forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and rear park distance control.
We think the Cooper S Countryman Classic trim represents the best value of the various available iterations.

The Cooper SE rides on 18-inch wheels and comes with an 8.8-inch navigation touch screen (with Apple CarPlay integration), rear parking distance control, rearview camera, panoramic moonroof, LED headlights and foglights, heated front seats, power tailgate, heated steering wheels, and Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel.
