The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage 5-door hatchback, and its 4-door sedan counterpart, the Mirage G4, represent affordable transportation at its best.
While not as powerful or well equipped as some competitors, the Mirage offers most basics, especially now that previously missing driver-assist systems have arrived for 2022.
Then there’s the Mirage’s standard 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, a backing matched only by Hyundai and Kia. Of course, cars like the Chevy Spark, Nissan Versa, and Hyundai Accent offer more power, a better driving experience, and more features for about the same price.
2022 Mitsubishi Mirage ES (Starting at $14,645, hatchback), ($15,645, G4 sedan)
The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage derives power from a diminutive 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine good for a mere 78 horsepower. A 5-speed manual is standard on the ES trim, with an optional continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The CVT is standard on all other trims.
A walk around the Mirage ES reveals simple styling and features, equipped with 14-inch steel wheels and plastic covers, halogen headlights, a roof spoiler, and body-colored bumpers and mirrors. Variable intermittent front wipers, a rear wiper washer, and a rear backup camera round out the Mirage’s exterior highlights.
This year, the Mirage gains a few driver-assist systems, although it still lags behind most competitors in its overall offerings. Low-speed automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection is standard on the ES, and front and rear parking sensors are optional. Also standard is hill-start assist, a tire pressure monitor, and front, front side-impact, and front and rear side-curtain airbags.
The Mirage ES’ most impressive features reside inside the cabin. Cloth is the order of the day when it comes to seat fabric, with a 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat and a split-folding rear seat.
Standard convenience items include cruise control, automatic climate control, Bluetooth hands-free smartphone connectivity, power windows, power door locks, and remote keyless entry.
On the infotainment front, Mitsubishi didn’t skimp. The Mirage ES comes with a 7-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. An AM/FM stereo with four speakers covers music duty, with an available Rockford Fosgate upgrade.
The Mirage 4G ES is identically equipped, save for having a trunk instead of a hatchback and no rear wiper/washer.
The Mirage doesn’t offer any factory-installed packages, but there are numerous dealer-installed options worth mentioning. The Black Edition builds off the LE but adds more visual pop. It includes automatic headlights, fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, red grille accents, and 15-inch black alloy wheels.
The Black Edition gets black mirror caps, a black roof spoiler, red cloth door inserts, and red stitching on the black cloth seats. Red stitching is also found on the leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, while piano black trim surrounds the vents and console.

Standard upgrades include LED headlights and daytime running lights, automatic high beams, fog lights, and body-colored side mirrors with turn signals. Also in the mix are rain-sensing wipers and 15-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the SE seats get a lovely combination of fabric and faux leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped shift knob. Heated front seats are standard, as is Mitsubishi’s FAST-key proximity key fob that lets you unlock your door and start the car via a push-button starter without ever having to hold the fob in your hand.
Finally, on the safety front, the SE gains lane-departure warning.
