2022 Mitsubishi Outlander: Choosing the Right Trim

All-new, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander looks like no Mitsubishi that’s gone before.

An upscale, 7-passenger cabin complements its bold, jaw-dropping exterior.

Part of the Alliance, which includes Nissan, Renault, and several other brands, Mitsubishi enjoys access to their technology, engineering, and parts bins. Most notably, Outlander shares a platform, engine, and other bits and pieces with the Nissan Rogue.

Considered a compact SUV, Outlander is actually a tad bigger than most segment rivals like the Toyota RAV-4.

Similar in exterior size to the Rogue, the new Outlander’s cabin is larger, and its wheelbase is longer than the previous Outlander model. Its third-row seat, however, is best left to smaller children.

Mitsubishi offers the Outlander in ES, SE, and SEL grades.

Generating thrust is the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine shared with the Rogue. It makes 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. An automatic transmission with paddle shifters ushers engine power to the wheels.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard. Optional on all three Outlander grades is S-AWC. That’s Mitsubishi speak for all-wheel drive (AWD), but it’s actually more than that.

Standing for Super All Wheel Control, S-AWC manages the driving and braking of all four wheels.

The S-AWC provides six modes: Eco, Normal, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow, and Mud. There is also a Lock button. Lock simulates a locked-differential setting by locking equal amounts of torque to all four wheels. This is for hardier off-roading.

According to government estimates, FWD Outlander’s fuel economy is 24 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg in combined driving.

Spending the extra $1,800 for S-AWC has minimal influence on mileage. With AWD, the numbers are 24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.
