The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport returns basically unchanged.
Why, in such a hotly contested segment, Mitsubishi doesn’t update the Outlander Sport is a head-scratcher. The last redesign was in 2012, and the last major refresh was in 2016.
Among its rivals clogging the small SUV bullpen are the Hyundai Kona, Jeep Renegade, Subaru Crosstrek, and Nissan Rogue Sport.
We like Outlander Sport for its abundance of standard features, affordable price, and long warranty.
Mitsubishi separates Outback Sport into five trim levels: S, ES, LE, SE, and GT. There are also Special Editions of the SE and GT grades.
Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard on the lower trims. All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on the GT and optional ($1,550) on the ES, LE, and SE grades.
Providing thrust in all but the GT is a 148-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine.
A 168-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder powers the GT.
Both engines engage an automatic transmission to spin the wheels.
By the government’s estimates, fuel economy with the FWD 2.0L is 24 miles per gallon in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg in combined driving. Opting for AWD drops each number by 1 mpg.
The estimates for the AWD 2.4L are 23 mpg city/28 mpg highway/25 mpg combined.
A 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year or 60,000-mile basic warranty provide the factory protection.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport S includes:

- Rain-sensing wipers – It automatically engages the wipers when the system senses moisture on the windshield. The wiper speed adjusts according to the volume of the rain. Finding this feature at this price point is rare.
- Auto-dimming rearview mirror – Using photosensors, it recognizes bright headlights closing from behind. It then automatically dims the reflection of those lights.
