Beyond adding a new Midnight Edition package to the SR grade, the 2022 Nissan Altima returns basically unchanged.
We don’t number Altima among the great midsize sedans. We reserve that praise for the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. However, Altima is good enough.
It’s good enough to transport your family from here to there. It’s good enough, when appropriately outfitted, to be described as “fun to drive.” Altima is also good enough to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ accolade.
Yep, Altima is good enough to be on your list if you are considering a midsize sedan.
We like Altima for its solid mileage, fetching looks, available all-wheel drive (AWD), high-performance VC-Turbo engine, and impressive safety creds.
We think Nissan is missing the boat by not offering a hybrid (HEV) version and not pairing the AWD with the VC-Turbo, but these are both marketing issues.
Nissan separates Altima into six grades: S, SV, SR, SL, VC-T SR, and Platinum.
Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard in all but the Platinum. You may opt for AWD in the SV, SR, and SL trims. The upcharge is $1,400.
Providing the propulsion in every grade save for the VC-T SR is a 188-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. Nissan pairs it with an automatic transmission.
With FWD, the government estimates that the fuel economy is 28 miles per gallon in the city, 39 mpg on the highway, and 32 mpg in combined driving. Opting for AWD scrubs away a bit of mileage to 26 mpg city/36 mpg highway/30 mpg combined.
The VC-T SR sources its thrust from a 248-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. Nissan only offers it with FWD.
Despite the added performance, the turbo doesn’t lose much in the way of fuel economy. Its estimated mileage is 27 mpg city/37 mpg highway/31 mpg combined.
2022 Nissan Altima S (starting at $24,550)
The 2022 Nissan Altima S starts at $24,550.
Standard are 16-inch steel wheels, projector Halogen headlights, keyless entry with push-button start, remote start, cruise control, and a tilt-telescopic steering wheel.
Also included are high-beam assist and hill-start assist.
The infotainment system includes a 7-inch touchscreen, a 6-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, hands-free texting, and a USB port.
Among the driver aids are forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and driver-alert warning.
You may add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert in the Driver Assist Package for $475.

2022 Nissan Altima S includes:
- Keyless entry – If the key fob is on your person, the doors automatically unlock when you touch the door handle. Push-button start pairs with keyless entry.
- Tilt-telescopic steering wheel – Allows the driver to set both the height and distance of the steering wheel.
- Forward-collision warning – Using a forward-pointing camera and radar technology, this system scans the road ahead and warns the driver of any collision risk audibly and visually. If the driver doesn’t react to the warning, the system automatically applies the brakes.
2022 Nissan Altima SV (starting at $25,550)
The 2022 Nissan Altima SV starts at $25,550.
Building on the S, the SV adds 17-inch alloy wheels, LED projector headlights, rear-park assist, two more USB ports, and an 8-inch touchscreen.
Also standard are an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite-radio capability, and lane-tracing assist.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic rear braking are also included.
Pony up $1,800 for the SV Premium Package to gain the semi-autonomous driver aid ProPilot Assist, a power moonroof, and heated front seats. Heated outboard mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are also included.

2022 Nissan Altima SV includes:
- LED headlights – LEDs illuminate a wider and longer area than regular incandescent lights. That means they are also easier for other drivers to see. Because these are projector headlights, they illuminate an even larger area.
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – Allows your smartphone to interface with your vehicle. Not only can you access the music on your phone, but you can also send messages, receive messages, make calls, and so forth through your vehicle’s media system.
- Blind-spot monitoring – This radar-based system warns of traffic approaching your flanks. It also includes rear cross-traffic alert to warn of vehicles crossing behind you when in reverse. Auto-reverse braking is also standard.

The 2022 Nissan Altima SR starts at $26,550.
The SR is Altima’s sporty model.
The SR adds appearance elements to the SV content, plus 19-inch alloy wheels, paddle shifters, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
For $1,750, you may add the all-new Midnight Edition Package. It features a few unique exterior colors and dark 18-inch aluminum wheels.

2022 Nissan Altima SL (starting at $29,990)
The 2022 Nissan Altima SL starts at $29,990.
To the 2.5 SR, the SL adds the SV Premium Package plus 17-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lights, remote start, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
Also included are a navigation system, a 9-speaker Bose audio system, traffic-sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control.

2022 Nissan Altima SL Includes:
- ProPilot Assist – Nissan’s semi-autonomous driver-assistance system, it helps the driver accelerate, brake, and steer the vehicle.
- Dual-zone automatic climate control – A set-it-and-forget-it system, it divides the vehicle into left and right regions. It provides separate temperature settings for each region. Once set, it automatically maintains the preset temperatures.
- Adaptive cruise control – Once you have engaged the system and set the speed, the system will maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, braking and accelerating as needed.
2022 Nissan Altima VC-T SR (starting at $30,900)
The 2022 Nissan Altima VC-T SR starts at $30,900.
This is actually a subset of the 2.5 SR grade that Nissan separates into its own trim level.
The VC-T SR adds to the SR content with the 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder. It also adds a power moonroof, heated outboard mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, and heated front seats.
