The 2022 Nissan Titan XD slots between a traditional half-ton pickup and a more robust heavy-duty three-quarter-ton truck. It’s an interesting idea, but as its towing and payload numbers are equal and sometimes fall short of many half-ton pickups, it is hard to see the advantages. The Titan XD offers only one cab and bed configuration, lacks a diesel or hybrid engine option, and possesses middle-of-the-road reliability and resale figures. On the flip side, there isn’t a long waiting list to get one, and it comes nicely equipped with an excellent bumper-to-bumper 5-year/100,000-mile warranty.
2022 Nissan Titan XD S (starting at $45,580)
Like all Titan XD trucks, the S trim comes standard with a 400-horsepower 5.6-liter V8 making 413 lb-ft of torque. It’s attached to a 9-speed transmission and standard 4-wheel-drive system (4WD). The Titan XD features a double-wishbone front suspension with a 36-mm stabilizer bar and a leaf spring rear suspension with a 26.5-mm stabilizer bar. The S has the highest tow rating of the four Titan XD trims, maxing out at 10,920 pounds.
A handsome truck, the 2022 Titan XD affords only one configuration: a crew cab with a 6.5-foot bed. Standard equipment for the S trim includes 17-inch steel wheels, halogen headlights, a spray-in bedliner, dual manual-folding outside mirrors, and black bumpers. The XD’s rear tailgate is both removable and lockable.
Nissan equips every Titan XD S with a host of safety and driver assists. The standard Nissan Safety Shield 360 brings automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and reverse automatic braking. Also in the mix is Nissan’s Intelligent Forward Collision Warning system that uses radar to detect the distance between the Titan XD and the two cars ahead, alerting the driver when traffic may suddenly slow or stop.
Other standard safety features worth mentioning include trailer sway control, electronic traction and stability control, a four-corner tire pressure monitor, and hill start assist. The Titan XD has front, front side-impact, front knee, and front and rear side-curtain airbag protection. Rear-door alert reminds the driver to check the back seat before leaving the vehicle, while rear seatbelt reminders help rear passengers remember to buckle up.
On the comfort and convenience front, the Titan XD S comes standard with a 40/20/40 manually-adjustable split-bench front seat and a 60/40 flip-up rear bench seat, creating enough room for six grown adults. Nissan’s NASA-inspired Zero Gravity seat technology helps make long rides more comfortable.
The instrument cluster features a 7-inch display screen with an analog tachometer and speedometer. The cluster also includes analog gauges for water temperature and oil pressure, with digital readouts for transmission temperature, outside temperature, voltage, and the Advanced Drive-Assist Display that delivers essential information where the driver can quickly see it.
The Titan XD S includes a manual tilt/telescoping steering wheel featuring cruise control, audio, and display screen controls. Also standard is a 6-speaker audio system and an 8-inch color touch-screen display serving as the infotainment hub and rearview monitor. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto accompany Nissan Connect apps and services, Bluetooth, SiriusXM (requires subscription), and two USB ports — one Type-A and one Type-C.
Additional cab features include one-touch up/down front power windows, power door locks with remote entry and push-button start, a manually-sliding rear window, rear window defroster, and manual air conditioning.
Finally, little touches often overlooked on base models are appreciated here. They include sliding extended sun visors, a built-in 4- and 7-pin trailer pin connector, rear reading lamps, and a total of six cup holders.
The only option package for the S trim contains a set of heavy-duty front springs.
With the $1,695 destination fee, the 2022 Nissan Titan XD S Crew Cab costs $47,275. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $849. See 2022 Nissan Titan XD S models for sale
