2022 Porsche 718 Boxster: Choosing the Right Trim

Other than the availability of a couple of fresh exterior colors, the 2022 Porsche 718 Boxster returns unchanged.

The Boxster is the convertible version of the 718. The Cayman, which we detail elsewhere, is the 718 coupe configuration.

Still a driver for sports car purists, the mid-engine Boxster lines up against an array of rivals, including the Chevrolet Corvette and BMW Z4.

We like the two-seat Boxster for its athletic handling, smooth-shifting manual transmission, upscale interior quality, and spirited engines.

Porsche offers Boxster in five trim levels: Boxster, Boxster T, Boxster S, Boxster GTS 4.0, and Boxster 25 Years.

We also include the Spyder (convertible) version of the 718 Cayman GT4 here because, well, it’s a convertible.

Power & Fuel Economy

Every Boxster is rear-wheel drive (RWD) and comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. You can upgrade to a 7-speed automatic for $3,210 in the base Boxster, Boxster S, and Spyder. Adding the automatic to the Boxster T, Boxster GTS 4.0, and Boxster 25 Years is an upcharge of $3,730.

Porsche assigns three engines to Boxster. The Boxster and Boxster T use a 300-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-4-cylinder engine.

According to government estimates, the fuel economy with manual transmission is 20 miles per gallon in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg in combined driving. Step up to the 7-speed automatic increases the mileage to 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway/24 mpg combined. The Boxster T loses 1 mpg in city driving.

Providing thrust for the Boxster S is a 350-hp 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-4-cylinder engine.

Its estimated fuel numbers are 19 mpg city/24 mpg highway/21 mpg combined with the manual transmission. Opting for the 7-speed automatic helps a little to 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway/22 mpg combined.

The Boxster GTS 4.0 and Boxster 25 years use a 394-hp 4.0-liter flat-6-cylinder engine.

With the manual transmission, the estimated numbers are 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway/19 mpg combined. When engine torque runs through the 7-speed automatic, mileage improves to 19 mpg city/24 mpg highway/21 mpg combined.

Motivating the 718 Spyder is a performance-tuned version of the 4.0 flat-6-cylinder that generates 414 hp.

With the manual transmission, it delivers 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway/19 mpg combined. Upgrading to the 7-speed automatic changes the numbers by 1 mpg across the board to 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway/20 mpg combined.
