Attempting to unwind all the variations of the 2022 Porsche 911 is akin to sorting out the John Smiths in directory assistance.
As if there weren’t already enough 911 iterations, for 2022, Porsche tossed in five more for the new GTS grade.
Porsche lists a total of 21 variations for 911 on its consumer retail website. The basement price is $101,200 for the base 911 Carrera. At the other end of the 911 spectrum is the $219,800 911 Turbo S Cabriolet.
It’s a dizzying array of engines, body styles, and drive wheels.
Easily the most recognizable Porsche, the 911 is about as pure a sports car as you can get.
We like its heritage of styling, sharp handling, down-to-business interior, and the availability of a manual transmission on several versions.
Porsche offers the 911 in six trim levels: Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera GTS, Turbo, Turbo S, and GT3.
Rear engine and rear-wheel drive (RWD), 911 comes as a 2+2 coupe, a Cabriolet (convertible), and a Targa (removable roof panel). Wherever you see the number 4 in the nomenclature, it identifies all-wheel drive (AWD).
Most models use an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters to deliver torque to the wheels. A no-charge option, buyers can swap a 7-speed manual transmission for the automatic in the S and GTS grades.
Power & Fuel Economy
Anchoring the 911 powerplants is a 379-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-6-cylinder engine. It provides go to the base Carrera models.
The government-estimated fuel economy is 18 miles per gallon in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg in combined driving. The mileage is the same no matter which base Carrera version you pick.
A 443-hp version of the 3.0L twin-turbo flat-6 propels all the Carrera S variations.
When armed with the 8-speed automatic, all RWD Carrera S versions post 18 mpg city/23 mpg highway/20 mpg combined. With the manual transmission, the numbers for the RWD coupe are 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway/21 mpg combined.
Mileage fluctuates with AWD and the other body styles, but they all deliver 20 mpg in combined driving.
The GTS grade gets the 473-hp version of the 3.0L twin-turbo flat-6. The government has yet to release fuel-economy estimates for the GTS.
Making thrust for the Turbo and Turbo Cabriolet is a 572-hp 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-6. Both Turbo models deliver 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway/17 mpg combined.
The Turbo S and Turbo S Cabriolet rely on a 640-hp variation of the 3.8L twin-turbo. They provide the same fuel economy as the regular Turbo models.
Featuring the only non-turbo in the 911 lineup, the GT3 uses a 502-hp 4.0-liter flat-6 to spin the wheels. There are no fuel-economy numbers for the GT3.
