The electric 2022 Porsche Taycan offers a viable alternative to the segment-leading Tesla Model S. The Taycan offers similar performance as the Model S but can’t yet come close to matching the Tesla’s range.
With four trim levels to choose from, the Taycan offers a little something for everyone, provided everyone has at least $85,000 to spend.
For the 2022 model year, natural-language voice commands can be used to control the Taycan’s entertainment and information system. Also, a new temperature-management system allows for slightly faster battery charging, while several bright “cult colors” from the 1990s are available, including Moonlight Blue Metallic, Acid Green, Rubystar, Riviera Blue, and Viola Metallic.
Also now available: Remote Park Assist. This option makes it possible to remotely park the Taycan using your smartphone. The driver simply holds down a button in the Porsche Connect app and watches the Taycan maneuver into a parallel or perpendicular parking spot.
The Taycan’s trim structure is somewhat confusing. Porsche falls back on its Turbo and Turbo S names reserved for its performance models, even though there’s no turbocharging involved.
2022 Porsche Taycan (starting at $82,700)
The entry-level Taycan trim differs from the other trims due to its rear-drive layout. Without a front electric motor, the rear-drive Taycan weighs a few hundred pounds less than its more expensive all-wheel-drive siblings, helping with performance and range.
The Taycan offers two battery pack choices, one producing the equivalent of 402 horsepower and a 225-mile range, and the other, dubbed Performance Battery Plus, making 469 horsepower with a 282-mile range. Both battery packs result in a zero-to-60-mph run of 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 143 mph.
The Taycan provides four driving modes (Range, Normal, Sport, and Individual), impacting range, speed, and acceleration in a nod to better driver interaction. The Taycan also features launch control and Power Steering Plus, a speed-sensitive power steering unit that moderates steering feel.
The Taycan has a steel spring suspension with Porsche’s PASM adaptive shock damping and integrated 4D Chassis Control. Standard 19-inch Taycan Aero wheels come surrounded by summer performance tires. There’s no spare, but a tire sealant and air compressor serve as a substitute.
The Taycan features recessed electric door handles that present themselves when you unlock the car. Also included are auto-dimming power heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, and Porsche Active Aerodynamics with active air intake flaps and an electrically deployable rear spoiler. LED headlights and daytime running lights round out the Taycan’s exterior features.
The Taycan’s passenger compartment features 8-way power and heated front seats and a 2+2 seating layout with a 60/40 split-folding bucket-style rear seat. Seating material includes standard partial leather or a choice of leather or leather-free Race-Tex. Thanks to the lack of a combustion engine, the Taycan has luggage compartments at both the rear and front.
Porsche fits the Taycan with a large 16.8-inch curved display for the driver that includes touch-screen controls for lighting and chassis control. Another touch screen covers infotainment and navigation, while a third lays flat on the console operating the dual-zone climate controls and heated seats.
When it comes to infotainment, the Taycan’s standard system gets upgraded this year, with wired Android Auto joining wireless Apple CarPlay. The system includes FM and HD radio (sorry, AM fans), Bluetooth streaming, SiriusXM, online navigation, and voice control featuring casual speech recognition. Porsche connected and tracking services are included but require a subscription after 36 months.
Music flows from a 10-speaker audio system with a 150-watt amplifier. Also standard is a tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio, cruise control, and Bluetooth.
As with any Porsche, the Taycan offers a dizzying array of options, starting with 17 new paint colors harkening back to the wild 1990s. Names like Acid Green, Rubystar, and Moonlight Blue Metallic are among the choices, or you can send a paint sample of your own to Porsche, and they’ll match it (for a hefty fee, of course).
The Premium Package adds a fixed glass panoramic roof, adaptive LED headlights, 14-way ventilated sport seats with memory package, a Bose audio upgrade, lane-change assist, power-folding exterior mirrors, a surround-view monitor, ambient lighting, and a cabin air ionizer.
The Sport Chrono Package brings a GT sport steering wheel with a mode switch, an additional Sport + driving mode, and an analog and digital clock. The Technology Package adds a passenger-side digital display screen, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display. Also included in the package is Remote Park Assist, a new feature this year that allows you to park the Taycan remotely via a smartphone app.
Notable standalone options worth mentioning include numerous exterior styling packages, 19-, 20-, and 21-inch wheels, Electronic Sport Sound that enhances the way the car sounds, an adaptive air suspension, rear-axle steering, and torque vectoring brakes. The Taycan’s headlights offer an upgrade to the multi-beam Matrix design.
Additional driver-assists include lane-change assist, night vision assist, lane-keeping assist, and Porsche’s InnoDrive, enhancing the available adaptive cruise control using navigation and traffic-sign recognition software.
Buyers can opt for a heated steering wheel, 4-zone climate control, a full rear seat (2+1), heated rear seats, and various colors for seat belts and interior accents. There are even more options for coverings on the ceiling, console, dash, and doors.
Audio fans will want either the 12-speaker 555-watt Bose sound system or 21-speaker 1,455-watt Burmester audio.
For faster charge times using an AC outlet, buyers can opt for a 19.2 kW onboard charger or onboard 150 kW/400V DC charger when charging at a public charging station.

2022 Porsche Taycan includes:

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S (starting at $103,800)
The Taycan 4S adds one more electric motor and a single-speed transmission at the front, giving the Taycan all-wheel drive. With this setup, the Taycan S can bolt to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds (using Overboost Power with Launch Control). The range with the standard battery jumps to 227 miles, but with the Performance Battery Plus, it falls to 272 miles.
The Taycan S builds off the base Taycan, adding an adaptive air suspension with Porsche Smartlift. This ingenious system learns locations where the car needs to be higher to avoid scraping (such as a driveway entrance or speed bumps) and automatically raises the suspension.
The LED headlights include the Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus, which adds two more features to the PDLS system: automatic high beam control and Intersection Assistant that engages cornering lamps when making a right or left turn.
Standard driver systems include lane-keeping assist with traffic-sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors with rear camera, and Homelink garage door opener.

Inside, the new Taycan GTS is set apart by a unique steering wheel and Race-Tex, Porsche’s synthetic (and vegan-friendly) leather upholstery. A black satin finish is used on the side vents and wheels, and enhanced Electric Sport Sound lets people know this is the first electric GTS.
On the outside, the GTS wears the SportDesign front fascia and side skirts, plus gloss-black window trim. Additionally, the rear diffuser has a high-gloss black inlay, the side skirts feature GTS logos, and the rear badging is done in matte black. Complementing the 20-inch aero-design wheels is a rear light strip featuring the Porsche logo in black, plus matrix LED headlights.

2022 Porsche Taycan GTS includes:

When using Overboost Power and Launch Control, The Taycan Turbo’s electric battery/motor duo puts out an impressive 670 horsepower and can propel the car to 60 mph in 3-seconds flat. The Turbo has a range of 212 miles that increases to 275 with the Performance Battery Plus option.
Upgrades over the Taycan S include Porsche Surface Coated Brakes, torque vectoring, Power Steering Plus, LED Matrix adaptive headlights, and 14-way power-adjustable heated front seats with memory for the mirrors and power-adjustable steering wheel. The Turbo rides on 20-inch wheels with performance tires.

Horsepower is equal at 616, but the Overboost Power with Launch Control ups output to 750 horsepower, resulting in a 2.6-second 0-60 run and a top speed of 161 mph.
The 2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo S borrows a from the Turbo’s optional equipment list, making standard ceramic composite brakes, SportDesign exterior carbon fiber side skirts, 21-inch Mission E Design wheels, rear-axle steering, and Electric Sport Sound.
The Turbo S upgrades its interior with 18-way adaptive sport front seats, a two-tone Race-Tex interior, and Matte Carbon Fiber interior trim.
