Ram’s efforts to push its 2022 Ram ProMaster commercial van to the head of the class takes form in a refreshed engine, an all-new transmission, and loads of new technology.
An ugly ducking by any measure, the ProMaster’s only option for a win in a beauty contest is for “Talent” or “Congeniality.”
For 2022, Ram has leaped forward in both categories.
In the area of talent, a new (to the ProMaster) 9-speed automatic transmission ups the gear count by three and should improve fuel economy.
Ram refreshed the V6, as well, but its production numbers are unchanged.
A new push-button electric parking brake automatically releases when the driver-side seatbelt fastens and the transmission shifts into gear. Consequently, the van gets underway more quickly.
To enhance congeniality (user-friendliness), Ram added a suite of available driver aids, more safety technology, and better infotainment features. For example, ProMaster gets the new five-times-faster Uconnect 5 with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto.
We particularly like ProMaster’s huge cargo area, available high-roof models, front-wheel drive (FWD), and the wide array of technologies.
Every ProMaster Sources its thrust from a 3.6-liter V6 engine mated to the new 9-speed automatic transmission.
The government has yet to post mileage estimates for the 2022 ProMaster with its new transmission.
Configurations
With almost as many variations as the Ram 1500 pickup, Ram offers ProMaster in 1500, 2500, and 3500 classes. The difference in class is basically maximum load capabilities.
You may order ProMaster with a regular roof or high roof in panel or window form.
There are even cab-only Chassis Cab and Cutaway models. To the Chassis Cab, you can have just about any cargo solution from a box to a flatbed to a tank.
The Cutway versions only accommodate a box.
Basically, Ram builds the entire ProMaster lineup off the Cargo Van. Even the window van is considered a Cargo Van option.
Ram further parses it down to 1500, 2500, and 3500 models. Then reduces it into cargo, window, cab chassis, or cutaway configurations.
Finally, there are wheelbase lengths and low or high roof.
At the end of the day, those permutations are basically the same van with very similar standard content.

2022 Ram ProMaster Cargo Van (starting at $34,380)
The listed price is for the 1500 low roof version with the 118-inch wheelbase (WB).

Standard are 16-inch wheels, a center-stack phone shelf, push-button start, a 3.5-inch driver info display, air conditioning, power windows/door locks, and bucket seats.
The Uconnect 5 infotainment system has a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, dual phone connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and two USB ports.
The driver aids are cross-wind assist, forward-collision warning with auto emergency braking, traffic-sign recognition, and driver-alert warning.
Ram offers a bevy of option packages. For example, the Premium Convenience Group ($1,645) adds keyless entry, rain-sensing wipers, auto on-off headlights, navigation, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, and more.
The $6,495 Crew Van Package (2500 and 3500) adds a second-row three-passenger elevated seat, a fixed window on the driver’s side second row, and a passenger-side sliding door with a window.
A driver’s swivel seat will set you back $595.

2022 Ram ProMaster Cargo Van includes:

Ram offers only two versions of the ProMaster passenger van. It’s only available as the 2500 high roof with the 159-inch wheelbase (listed above) and the 3500 in the same configuration ($42,990).
