Returning this year with a new TRD Sport grade, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner maintains its high ranking among midsize SUVs.
Targeting on-road performance, the TRD Sport trim highlights include 20-inch wheels, a hood scoop, a front spoiler, unique exterior trim pieces, and an adaptive suspension.
Other new-for-2022 enhancements are LED high beams across the entire trim-level lineup.
The TRD Pro grade gains the standard Multi-Terrain Monitor with a series of cameras providing surrounding views of the trail.
Likewise, the top-of-the-line Platinum trim gets the Panoramic View Monitor. Essentially, it provides the same views as the Multi-Terrain Monitor but for crowded parking lots.
If you want rugged off-road looks and performance (4-wheel-drive [4WD] versions only), we recommend 4Runner. If you want refinement in your midsize SUV, go with Toyota’s Highlander.
We like 4Runner for its old-school body-on-frame ruggedness, solid cargo capacity, available driver aids, easy-to-use controls, and uber off-road-capable models.
On the other hand, its truck-based architecture and aging drivetrain with a V6 and a 5-speed automatic transmission conspire to deliver below-average fuel economy.
Moreover, ride quality is bumpy and stiff on models without the adaptive suspension, to say the least.
Toyota separates 4Runner into eight trim levels: SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro.
However, as you progress through the trim levels, each doesn’t necessarily build on the previous grade. The Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, and TRD Off-Road add features to the SR5 content.
The TRD Off-Road Premium adds features to the TRD Off-Road. The Limited grade builds from the SR5 Premium. The TRD Pro adds its content to the TRD Off-Road Premium.
Power & Fuel Economy
Sourcing its power from a 4.0-liter V6 married to a 5-speed automatic transmission, 4Runner isn’t the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class.
Government estimates rate the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) fuel economy at 17 miles per gallon in the city, 21 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg in combined driving. Compare that to Highlander’s 21 mpg/29 mpg/24 mpg.
Opting for 4WD doesn’t affect 4Runner’s estimated mileage numbers by much. It scrubs 1 mpg from the highway number.
4WD does add to the bottom line. For the SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, and SR5 Premium, the upcharge is $1,875. It’s $2,035 for the Limited.
TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro come with 4WD as standard.

Adaptive cruise control and high-beam assist are also standard.
