2022 Toyota Highlander: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2022 Toyota Highlander is one of the best three-row SUVs money can buy, with an outstanding reputation for reliability and resale and a hybrid engine option returning economy car-like fuel economy.

Gasoline-only trims share the same 295-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, while the hybrids employ a smaller 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine and electric motor setup. All-wheel drive adds $1,600 to the L, LE, and XLE trims and $1,950 to the XSE, Limited, and Platinum.

2022 Toyota Highlander L (starting at $35,205)

2022 Toyota Highlander L Front left

The 2022 Toyota Highlander starts at $35,205.

The Highlander L is the line’s most basic trim, offering a good blend of value and safety in an affordable crossover SUV.  While available with two-wheel or all-wheel drive, the L doesn’t offer the hybrid engine option.

Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, power heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, and rear privacy glass. Variable intermittent front wipers have de-icers, and the manually-operated rear liftgate features a defroster, wiper/washer, rear camera, and rear camera washer. The L comes equipped with Toyota’s Smart Key System allowing for remote door and liftgate locking and unlocking and a push-button starter.

On the safety front, the Highlander L comes with Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.5+. The driver-assist suite includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, intersection support (can slow or stop the vehicle when making a dangerous left turn into oncoming traffic), adaptive cruise control, and road sign recognition. Also included are lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beam headlights.

Other safety features of note include eight airbags with side curtains covering all three rows, rear seat reminder (reminds the driver to check the back seat before leaving and locking the vehicle), hill start assist, individual tire pressure monitoring, and driver modes for Snow, Eco, Sport, and Normal. All-wheel-drive models have an additional Multi-Terrain Select feature with Mud/Sand, Rock/Dirt, and Normal modes.

Crawling inside the cabin, you’ll find three-row seating for eight, cloth upholstery, and an 8-way power driver’s seat.  The second-row features a 60/40 split with fold and recline seatbacks, while the third-row seat also splits 60/40 and folds flat when not needed.

Among the nicer interior amenities are auto up/down power windows at all positions and three-row automatic climate controls with second-row control panel and vents in all three rows. An overhead console features a conversation mirror and sunglass storage, while the sliding sun visors have built-in illuminated vanity mirrors. A tilt/telescoping steering wheel houses controls for the audio, Bluetooth phone, and cruise control, as well as buttons for the lane-keeping and lane-departure systems. Directly in front of the driver is a 4.2-inch color LCD for various information readouts such as fuel economy, average speed, and adaptive cruise control guidelines.

Controlling the media and audio is an 8-inch touch screen infotainment system with six speakers. It comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, plus a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio and a one-year free trial to Toyota Connected Services. A total of five USB ports and two 12-volt outlets provide plenty of charging points.
