The Toyota Mirai is a unique car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain. The original Toyota Mirai used a hatchback design reminiscent of the Prius hybrid, but the second-generation Mirai is different. It’s now a rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan with the same platform underpinning the Lexus LS.
Since this is a hydrogen fuel cell car, it’s only available in California. That’s because California is the only place with the infrastructure to fuel the niche market of hydrogen fuel cell cars. If you live in the Golden State, the Mirai is an appealing alternative to a premium battery electric vehicle (BEV) like a Tesla.
Hydrogen has a few advantages over BEVs. The biggest is refueling, which only takes about five minutes rather than leaving the car plugged in for hours. Another nice perk you get with the Mirai is complimentary fuel for up to six years or $15,000, whichever comes first.
The Toyota Mirai is available in two distinct trims, both quite well-appointed. Let’s take a closer look at the Mirai model range and see which trim is right for you.
2022 Toyota Mirai XLE (starting at $49,500)
The 2022 Toyota Mirai XLE starts at $49,500.
The base XLE trim of the Toyota Mirai is the more efficient of the two. All 2022 Mirai models use the same hydrogen fuel cell powertrain generating 182 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, but the XLE achieves an estimated combined MPGe rating of 74. The more luxurious Limited model gets a combined 65 MPGe. XLE has a range of up to 402 miles, and Limited can go up to 357 miles before it needs refueling.
With those numbers out of the way, let’s get into the standard features in the Mirai. The XLE trim is loaded with four USB power outlets, a wireless charging pad, auto-leveling LED headlights, LED taillights, and a universal garage door opener.
The standard 12.3-inch infotainment system is loaded with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa. It also has a JBL 14-speaker premium audio system.
The standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ safety tech suite includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and road sign assist.
There’s an Advanced Technology Package available for the XLE trim for an extra $1,410. It adds a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking assist with automated braking, and front-seat foot illumination.
When you add the $1,025 destination fee, the Mirai XLE has a starting price of $50,525. If you get a 60-month loan with 3% interest and put no money down, you’ll have a monthly payment of $908. See 2022 Toyota Mirai XLE models for sale
2022 Toyota Mirai XLE includes:
- Hydrogen fuel cell powertrain — The only thing that comes out of the Mirai’s tailpipe is water, and it can go up to 402 miles on a full tank.
- Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ — This safety tech suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, road sign assist, and more.
- 12.3-inch infotainment system — This intuitive touchscreen has Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and JBL premium audio.
2022 Toyota Mirai Limited (starting at $66,000)
The 2022 Toyota Mirai Limited starts at $66,000.
The Limited trim lifts the Mirai into the next level of luxury. The contents of the Advanced Technology Package come standard plus plenty of other premium features.
Standard kit on the Limited model includes 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic moonroof, 3-zone automatic climate control, perforated SofTex faux leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a memory driver’s seat, a power rear sunshade, manual rear-seat sunshades, and a color head-up display.
Quick reminder; the Limited model is less efficient and has less range than the XLE trim. If the extra luxury features are important to you, it’s a worthwhile trade-off.
With a 60-month loan at 3% interest, the starting monthly payment of a Mirai Limited is $1,204. See 2022 Toyota Mirai Limited models for sale
