The few changes Toyota made to the 2022 Toyota Tacoma are mostly small appearance tweaks.
However, the raised versions (SR5 Trail Edition and TRD Pro) get hoisted a half-inch higher in the back. Moreover, the Trail Edition’s front end adds 1.1 inches of ground clearance, while the TRD Pro adds 1.5 inches more.
This extra lift contributes to better approach, departure, and breakover angles.
Toyota also gives the Trail Edition a locking rear differential for improved traction off-road at low speed.
Tacoma isn’t the most refined of midsize trucks, but its dedicated off-road models are highly capable.
We aren’t overwhelmed with either of its engines. However, we like its ruggedness, off-road-capable trims, the available 6-speed manual transmission in 4×4 models, and the array of standard driver aids.
Toyota offers Tacoma in SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro grades.
Power & Fuel Economy
Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard in the SR, SR5, TRD Sport, and Limited trims with optional 4-wheel drive (4WD). Toyota offers the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro only in 4WD.
Serving as the base engine in the SR and SR5 is a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine. It’s bound to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Optional in the SR and SR5, but standard in all the other grades is a 3.5-liter V6. It also uses a 6-speed automatic tranny to rotate the wheels. Four-wheel-drive (4WD) versions offer a 6-speed manual option.
Government fuel-economy estimates for the 4-cylinder with RWD are 20 mpg city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg in combined driving. Opting for 4WD scrubs off 1 mpg from each number.
RWD versions with the V6 get an estimated 19 mpg city/24 mpg highway/21 mpg combined. With 4WD and the 6-speed automatic, the mileage is 18 mpg/22 mpg/20 mpg. Pick the 6-speed manual, and the numbers drop to 17 mpg/21 mpg/18 mpg.
Prices can vary for a trim level based on cab configuration (Access Cab or Double Cab), cargo box length (five feet or six feet), engine (SR and SR5), and in 4WD versions by transmission.
