2022 Toyota Tundra: Choosing the Right Trim

Totally reimagined, the 2022 Toyota Tundra rolls into showrooms with more capability and a well-deserved air of confidence.

A Tundra redesign was way past due because Toyota hadn’t given the Tundra a major makeover since 2007.

The 2022 overhaul, from its planning to its engineering to its design and finally, to its assembly, was all accomplished in the U.S.

Whether the improvements will elevate Tundra to the level of its target rivals, the Ford F-150, GM 1500 models (Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra), and the Ram 1500 remains to be seen. However, the improvements are both many and significant.

We can’t go into them in this canon detailing trim levels, but it would be journalistic malpractice not to mention at least a couple of the advancements.

Near the top of the list, Tundra offers a powerful twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine (arriving in late 2021) or a gas/electric mild-hybrid powertrain (covered elsewhere and arriving in the spring of 2022). Also notable: The new Tundra has forsaken leaf-spring rear suspension in favor of a multi-link live-axle setup with coil springs and a maximum towing capability of 12,000 pounds (nearly an 18% increase) possible.

A fresh double-wishbone arrangement comprises the front suspension.

Those wanting to take advantage of Tundra’s beefed-up towing capability will appreciate the newly available bundle of cameras providing a variety of views around the truck.

  • Toyota offers the Tundra with two cab choices: Double Cab (extended cab) and CrewMax (crew cab).
  • Cargo-box-length choices are 5.5 feet, 6.5 ft, and 8.1 ft.
  • Trim levels are SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794.

Power & Fuel Economy

Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard, but 4-wheel drive (4WD) is available for $3,000. Toyota provides 4WD as standard equipment on the TRD Pro model, the only Tundra that comes standard with the upcoming hybrid powertrain.

All non-hybrid Tundras source their thrust from a 389-horsepower 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 engine. It also produces 479 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission sends engine power to the wheels.

The base Tundra, the SR, gets EPA fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon city/24 mpg highway. In the SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 trim levels, the fuel economy drops only a bit, to 18 mpg city/23 mpg highway.

With 4×4, the Tundra SR and SR5 models are estimated at 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway, whereas the 4×4 versions of the Limited, Platinum, and 1794 come in at 17 mpg city/22 mpg highway.

Note: There’s no EPA fuel economy data yet for the upcoming hybrid Tundra, which produces a substantial 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque.
