All-new for 2021, the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 returns with some improvements. The estimated max range has been increased to 280 miles, and all ID.4s now come with three free years of unlimited 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America DC fast chargers.
The ID.4 represents VW’s first dedicated fully electric endeavor.
Although ID.4 is the first Volkswagen to use the brand’s new electric vehicle (EV) modular chassis, you wouldn’t know by looking at it.
A bit smaller than the Tiguan, ID.4 looks like another compact SUV.
VW offers ID.4 in Pro and Pro S grades. You can fit either with all-wheel drive (AWD) for $3,680.
We like ID.4’s traditional exterior styling, tidy interior layout, up to 280 miles of range, and comprehensive array of technologies.
VW uses a rear-mounted electric motor to spin the rear wheels. It generates 201 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque. An 82-kW lithium-ion battery pack with 288 pouch-style cells rests under the cabin floor.
To estimate fuel economy numbers for EVs, the government developed a special formula called Miles Per Gallon electric (MPGe).
Using that formula, the government estimates mileage for the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Pro at 121 MPGe city, 102 MPGe highway, and 112 MPGe combined. Those numbers drop to 106 city/96 highway/101 combined with AWD.
Moving up to Pro S RWD reduces the numbers to 116 city/97 highway/106 combined. Adding AWD drops the estimates to 100 city/90 highway/95 combined.
As of this writing, the government still offers a $7,500 tax credit for every ID.4.
