The biggest news for the 2022 Volvo S60 is the departure of the T5 and T6 powertrains to make way for the new B5 hybrid powertrain. That’s right; the S60 is now a hybrid-only model.
The S60 powertrain choice is between the B5 hybrid and the Recharge plug-in hybrid (PHEV) T8. Volvo is on a path to going fully electric by 2030. The S60’s electrification is another step toward that goal.
The S60’s key rivals are the Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series, and the Lexus IS.
We like the S60 for its impressive fuel economy, well-crafted cabin, comfy and supportive front seats, and up-to-date technology.
Volvo separates the B5 models into the Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription trim levels. All three are front-wheel drive (FWD), but all-wheel drive (AWD) is a $2,300 upgrade on all trim levels.
The Recharge PHEV T8 comes in the R-Design Expression, R-Design, and Inscription grades with eAWD (electronic AWD). There is also an uber-performance Polestar Engineered version of the T8.
For 2022, there is a new S60 Black Edition, available on the Momentum, R-Design, and Recharge (PHEV) versions of the S60. The $700 package includes black 19-inch wheels and a blacked-out grille, grille slash, Volvo badge, and window trim. Only 450 Volvo S60 Black Editions will be built.
Power & Fuel Economy
At the heart of the B5 and T8 powertrains is Volvo’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. An 8-speed automatic transmission still distributes engine output to the wheels of all S60 models.
Providing the hybrid system in the B5 is a 48-volt electric motor. This addition results in a slight 3-pony reduction in horsepower to 247, but you’ll never miss it. If you do, the increased fuel economy with the new B5 powertrain should dull the blow.
With FWD, the government-estimated mileage is 26 miles per gallon city, 35 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg in combined driving. That combined driving number is 4 mpg better than the T5’s. Opting for AWD scrubs a little off the numbers to 25 mpg/33 mpg/28 mpg. That’s a 3 mpg improvement in combined driving over the T5.
Using a supercharged version of the 2.0L turbo-4 and two electric motors, the T8 delivers 400 hp. The second electric motor is attached to the rear axle, translating into the electric AWD.
The government has a formula for judging a vehicle’s fuel economy that can operate on battery power alone. It’s called miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe). For the T8, that number is 63 MPGe. Computing fuel economy the traditional way, the estimated numbers are 28 mpg/33 mpg/30 mpg.
