As is happening across most of the Volvo lineup, the 2022 Volvo S90 rolls into showrooms as a hybrid-only model. Volvo replaces the T6 gasoline powertrain with the B6 hybrid powertrain.
The Recharge plug-in hybrid (PHEV) T8 powertrain returns unchanged.
Chief among S90’s rivals are the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, and Genesis G80.
We like the S90 for the same reasons we appreciate several other Volvo models: a well-contented user-friendly cabin, solid fuel economy, a wide array of driver aids, and handsome styling.
All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard for the B6 with electronic AWD (eAWD) standard for the Recharge T8 versions.
Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription are the B6 grades. The Recharge T8 only offers R-Design and Inscription trims.
Power & Fuel Economy
At the heart of both powertrains is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that’s quite common among Volvo models.
A supercharger in the B6 coaxes 295 horsepower from the 2.0L turbo-4 and 48-watt electric motor. This is roughly 20 hp less than last year’s T6.
Although the small loss of oomph is unfortunate, you’ve got to like that the B6 delivers better fuel economy.
According to government estimates, the B6 gets 28 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg in combined driving. That’s a 7-mpg improvement in city driving and a 4-mpg jump for combined driving.
Sticking with the B6 supercharged 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the Recharge plug-in hybrid (PHEV) T8 adds not just one but two electric motors. Volvo attaches the second one to the rear axle creating the electronic AWD.
The government has a formula for judging a vehicle’s fuel economy that can operate on battery power alone. It’s called miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe).
For the Recharge T8, it’s 69 MPGe. Calculating the estimated mileage with the traditional formula works out to 28 mpg city/33 mpg highway/30 mpg combined.
2022 Volvo S90 B6 Momentum (starting at $51,850)
The 2022 Volvo S90 B6 Momentum starts at $51,850.
Standard are 18-inch alloy wheels, a power panoramic moonroof, LED headlights with active bending, LED daytime running lights, and LED fog lights with Cornering.
Also included are keyless entry with push-button start, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch digital cluster display, and interior wood accents.
Other standard features are 10-way heated power-adjustable front seats, auto-dimming mirrors (rearview and outboard), and a Homelink transceiver.
The infotainment system is a 9-inch vertical touchscreen, a 10-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, four USB ports, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
A Google Maps-based navigation system is also included.
The standard driver aids are forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
Also included are lane-keeping assist with steering, lane-departure warning, road sign recognition, high-beam assist, and adaptive cruise control.
Volvo’s semi-autonomous driver-assistance system Pilot Assist is also standard. It helps the driver accelerate, steer, and brake the vehicle under certain conditions.
For $750, you can opt for the Climate Package with heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a high-pressure headlight-washing system.
The Advanced Package will set you back $2,100 but adds such goodies as a power trunk lid, a head-up display, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

2022 Volvo S90 B6 Momentum includes:
LED headlights with active bending – These are adaptive headlights that swivel in concert with the front wheels to light the way when taking a curve or making a turn.
Auto-dimming mirrors – These include rearview and outboard mirrors. Using photosensors, they recognize bright headlights closing from behind. They then automatically dim the reflection of those lights.
Pilot Assist – This is Volvo’s semi-autonomous driver-assistance system that can accelerate, brake, and steer the vehicle under certain conditions.

2022 Volvo S90 B6 R-Design starts at $60,050.
R-Design adds several black appearance elements. It also adds 19-inch alloy wheels, Nappa leather-trimmed seats, and a 14-speaker 600-watt Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system.
Quad-zone automatic climate control is also included.
R-Design also offers an Advanced Package ($1,900) and the Climate Package.
You can also add an Adaptive Air Suspension for $1,200.

It offers the R-Design’s Advanced Package and the Lounge Package ($1,300) with massaging front seats and ventilated rear seats.
