2022 Volvo V60: Choosing the Right Trim

Volvo whittled down the trim count from five to just two for the 2022 Volvo V60. Only the all-wheel-drive (AWD) Cross Country and the V60 Recharge plug-in hybrid (PHEV) T8 Polestar are left standing.

Passenger-car sales have been slumping in the face of the SUV/Crossover onslaught. Station wagons have fared even worse.

The Audi A4 Allroad and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain are the V60’s only real rivals.

We like the V60 for its sultry lines, an abundance of driver aids, standard AWD, and practicality.

Other Volvo models have replaced the T5 powertrain with the mild-hybrid B5. However, the gasoline-only 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder T5 remains the source of propulsion for the V60 Cross Country.

It makes 250 horsepower distributed to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

According to government estimates, its mileage is 22 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg in combined driving.

For the Recharge V60, the same turbo-4 adds a supercharger and two electric motors to create the PHEV T8 powertrain. Volvo attaches one motor to the rear axle creating electric AWD (eAWD).

The same 8-speed automatic tranny rounds out the powertrain that produces a combined 415 hp.

The government has a formula for judging the fuel economy of a vehicle that can operate on battery power alone. It’s called miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe). For the Recharge T8, the government estimate is 63 MPGe.

Using the traditional mpg formula, the estimate is 28 mpg city/31 mpg highway/30 mpg combined. As of this writing, Volvo says all Recharge PHEV T8 models are eligible for a $5,419 federal tax credit.
