Streamlining the trim-level count from four to one, the 2022 Volvo V90 returns with only its all-wheel-drive (AWD) Cross Country grade.
In other news, Volvo created a mild-hybrid B6 powertrain, replacing the T6 powertrain that propelled last year’s V90 Cross Country.
Otherwise, Volvo pretty much left the V90 alone.
The V90’s only major rivals are the Audi A6 Allroad and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain.
We like the V90 for its eye appeal, solid fuel economy, host of driver aids, and versatility.
The new B6 powertrain begins with the T6’s 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder engine. To that, it adds a 48-volt electric motor. The combined pony count is 295-horsepower. The V90 is all-wheel drive and uses an 8-speed automatic transmission.
According to government estimates, the fuel economy is 22 miles per gallon in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined.

2022 Volvo V90 Cross Country includes:
- Pilot Assist – This is Volvo’s semi-autonomous driver-assist system that accelerates, brakes, and steers the vehicle under certain conditions.
- Adjustable power steering – This allows the driver to dial down the amount of steering assistance the power-steering system provides.
- LED headlights with active bending – LEDs illuminate a wider and longer area than regular incandescent lights. That means they are also easier for other drivers to see. These headlights also bend in the direction the front wheels are steered to help illuminate the area into which the vehicle is traveling.
