First launched in 2021, the 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge returns with a few new tricks up its sleeve.
It will no longer be Volvo’s only fully electric (EV) model because the new C40 Recharge is arriving for 2022. We provide details on that model elsewhere.
The 2022 XC40 Recharge increases its estimated total range from last year’s 208 miles to 223 miles through some software goosing.
Volvo also changed the full name from “XC40 Recharge T8 eAWD” to “XC40 Recharge Twin eAWD.” In changing the XC40’s name, Volvo also modified how it arranges the model’s content.
Rather than standard features and option packages, for 2022, XC40 Recharge’s content is arranged into two Specification Levels.
Those two levels are Plus and Ultimate. Plus contains all the standard equipment in the 2021 XC40 Recharge (plus a few other goodies). Ultimate adds to the Plus content with all the remaining optional features from last year.
We like the XC40 Recharge for its stand-out styling, an impressive amount of standard features, the creative use of its interior space, and its array of driver aids.
Furthermore, it qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit.
Capable of charging to 80% in 40 minutes with a DC fast charger, the 78-kWh lithium-ion battery powers two electric motors – one on each axle. This produces the XC40 Recharge’s electric all-wheel drive (eAWD).
The XC40 Recharge may be the smallest of Volvo’s SUV family, but it’s no slouch. Its battery/motor setup produces 402 horsepower and a whopping 486 lb-ft of torque.
The government has a formula for judging the fuel economy of a vehicle operating on battery power alone. It’s called miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe). For the XC40 Recharge, it’s 92 MPGe in the city, 79 MPGe on the highway, and 85 MPGe in combined driving.
2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin Plus (starting at $55,300)
The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin Plus starts at $55,300.
Last year’s options included in the Plus standard content are the surround-view camera, front and rear park assist, and some care and services packages.
Also included are 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with active bending, LED fog lights with cornering, a power panoramic roof, and hill-descent control.
Other content includes a 12.3-inch digital cluster display, dual-zone automatic climate control, 8-way heated power-adjustable front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Aluminum sport pedals, adjustable power steering, high-beam assist, rain-sensing wipers, and keyless entry with push-button start are also standard.
The infotainment system includes a 9-inch vertical touchscreen, an 8-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, four USB ports, Wi-Fi capability, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
The driver aids are forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, and rear cross-traffic alert with braking. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist with steering, lane-departure warning, road-sign assist, and driver-attention monitoring are also included.
Available with the Plus Package is the $1,100 Climate Package. It adds heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a heat pump, and high-pressure headlight washers.
Adding the $1,045 destination fee to the Plus base price brings the total to $56,345. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to $1,012 per month. See 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge Plus Models for sale

2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin Ultimate (starting at $58,150)
The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin Ultimate starts at $58,150.
Ultimate builds on Plus content and includes the Plus Climate Package.
Ultimate also adds 20-inch alloy wheels, auto-dimming mirrors (rearview and outboard), and manual front-seat cushion extensions.
A 13-speaker/600-watt Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system and the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving-assistance system are standard.
