2022 Volvo XC60: Choosing the Right Trim

Volvo shook up the trim-level roster for the 2022 Volvo XC60. This is mostly a result of similar but new engines replacing the T5 and T6 systems from last year.

Instead, we now have the B5 and B6. Both incorporate a 48-volt hybrid system. The top-of-the-line T8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup is unchanged.

Volvo also gave the XC60 a slight facelift, including the grille and front bumper.

A new Android-based infotainment system provides a larger touchscreen, Google Maps navigation, and a voice assistant.

We like the XC60 for its tidy size, stunning good looks, efficient and well-appointed cabin, and high-level technology.

This year’s engine lineup is B5, B6 AWD, Recharge Plug-in Hybrid T8 eAWD, and T8 Polestar.

The actual trim levels are a hodgepodge of grades somewhat changing with each propulsion system. You can’t tell the players without a program. We’ll sort things out as we go.

Power & Fuel Economy

Only available in the B5, rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard. All-wheel drive (AWD) is a $2,300 option in B5 models but standard throughout the rest of the XC60 lineup.

Regardless of the engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission hustles engine output to the wheels.

In B5 models, a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder mates with the hybrid system, producing 247 horsepower.

Using the same 2.0L turbo and hybrid system as the B5, the B6 tacks on a supercharger. It makes 295 hp.

At the top of the heap is the T8 powertrain. It uses the B6 supercharged 2.0L turbo but adds two electric motors. One lands on the rear axle for the eAWD system. The combined system churns out 400 hp in the Recharge T8.

In FWD, the B5 models deliver fuel economy of 23 miles per gallon in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg in combined driving. Opting for AWD drops the numbers a little to 22 mpg city/28 mpg highway/24 mpg combined.

B6 models with standard AWD provide mileage of 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway/24 mpg combined.

The government has a formula for judging the fuel economy of a vehicle that can operate on battery power alone. It’s called miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe).

In the Recharge PHEV T8, it’s 57 MPGe. Once the electrons exhaust themselves, the mileage is 25 mpg combined.

As of this writing, Volvo says the XC60 Recharge T8 is eligible for a $5,419 federal tax credit.

FAQ

  • What is the best 2022 Volvo XC60 trim?

As even the base models are well-equipped, a 2022 Volvo XC60 Momentum with the B5 powertrain and optional all-wheel drive (AWD) would meet most people’s needs just fine, even in areas with bad weather.

  • How many mpg does the 2022 Volvo XC60 get?

The 2022 Volvo XC60 B5 is rated by the EPA at 23 mpg city/30 mpg highway/26 mpg combined. With all-wheel drive, the B5 has ratings of 22 mpg city/28 mpg highway/24 mpg combined. As a B6 AWD model, the XC60 returns 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway/24 mpg combined. The 2021 Volvo XC60 received a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
