The biggest news for the returning 2023 BMW 8 Series is an illuminated front grille. (The good news: The iconic kidney grille is still normal size.) BMW is also rolling out a few new exterior colors with names like BMW Individual Frozen Tanzanite Blue Metallic and Skyscraper Grey Metallic. The number of 8 Series variants (13) is somewhat overwhelming. BMW offers three body configurations: the 4-door Gran Coupe, the 2-door Coupe, and the Convertible. The base engine is a turbocharged inline 6-cylinder. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard, but all-wheel drive (AWD) — xDrive in BMW-speak — can be added to most versions.
Three other 4.4-liter V8 engines provide thrust for the M850 xDrive, the Alpina B8, and the M8 Competition. We’ll sort out all of this as we move through the parade of trim-level details.

2023 BMW 840i Coupe (Starting at $85,000)
Amazingly, in today’s volatile car market, the price of the entry-level 8 Series vehicle didn’t increase from 2022.
A 335-hp 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine spins the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Paddle shifters and launch control are standard. Its 0-to-60 sprint takes 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 130 miles per hour. According to government estimates, the combined mileage in city and highway driving is 25 mpg with RWD and 23 mpg with xDrive. All 840i variants use this engine and transmission.
Standard are 19-inch alloy wheels, M Sport brakes with blue calipers, an M Sport differential, and a power trunk lid. Also included are the illuminated grille, adaptive LED headlights, panoramic moonroof, power rear sunshade, 16-way power-adjustable front seats, and leather seating. Heated front seats, armrests, and steering wheel, plus dual-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, and head-up display all come standard as well.
Other features are the power-adjustable steering wheel, keyless entry with push-button start, navigation system, remote start, and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
Featured infotainment system content includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen, 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Also standard are satellite-radio capability, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and wireless phone charging.
Among the driver aids are high-beam assist, forward collision warning with low-speed emergency braking, and lane-departure warning.
Among the options are two $1,700 safety technology packages. One is the Driving Assistance Package with blind-spot monitoring, surround-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, front-rear park assist, and Parking Assistant Plus, which helps you parallel park the car. The other is the Driving Assistance Pro Package that adds traffic-jam assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane-keeping assist with steering assist, and front cross-traffic alert.
BMW offers several other option packages, as well.

However, it’s called M xDrive through which the driver can choose among RWD, AWD, and AWD Sport settings. Combined fuel economy is 17 mpg.
Most of what elevates the M8 Competition over the M850i are upgrades in the drivetrain, brakes, and suspension. M8 Competition models also get a trunk-mounted carbon-fiber spoiler. In fact, other carbon-fiber elements reduce the M8’s weight. In short, the M8 Competition is a much more aggressive package than the M850i.
