2023 BMW 8 Series: Choosing the Right Trim

The biggest news for the returning 2023 BMW 8 Series is an illuminated front grille. (The good news: The iconic kidney grille is still normal size.) BMW is also rolling out a few new exterior colors with names like BMW Individual Frozen Tanzanite Blue Metallic and Skyscraper Grey Metallic. You can outfit your M8 Competition with optional M Carbon heated and power-adjustable bucket seats.

The number of 8 Series variants (13) is somewhat overwhelming. BMW offers three body configurations: the 4-door Gran Coupe, the 2-door Coupe, and the Convertible. The base engine is a turbocharged inline 6-cylinder. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard, but all-wheel drive (AWD) — xDrive in BMW-speak — can be added to most versions.

Three other 4.4-liter V8 engines provide thrust for the M850 xDrive, the Alpina B8, and the M8 Competition. We’ll sort out all of this as we move through the parade of trim-level details.

Moreover, BMW allows for a certain amount of off-catalog customizing on certain models through its BMW Individual program.

Because of its price point and performance engineering, the 8 Series speaks to a limited and elite audience. BMW’s shotgun blast of variations strives to provide an inviting alternative to every taste among its narrow slice of the market.

2023 BMW 840i Coupe (Starting at $85,000)

Amazingly, in today’s volatile car market, the price of the entry-level 8 Series vehicle didn’t increase from 2022.

A 335-hp 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine spins the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Paddle shifters and launch control are standard. Its 0-to-60 sprint takes 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 130 miles per hour. According to government estimates, the combined mileage in city and highway driving is 25 mpg with RWD and 23 mpg with xDrive. All 840i variants use this engine and transmission.

Standard are 19-inch alloy wheels, M Sport brakes with blue calipers, an M Sport differential, and a power trunk lid. Also included are the illuminated grille, adaptive LED headlights, panoramic moonroof, power rear sunshade, 16-way power-adjustable front seats, and leather seating. Heated front seats, armrests, and steering wheel, plus dual-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, and head-up display all come standard as well.

Other features are the power-adjustable steering wheel, keyless entry with push-button start, navigation system, remote start, and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.

Featured infotainment system content includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen, 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Also standard are satellite-radio capability, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and wireless phone charging.

Among the driver aids are high-beam assist, forward collision warning with low-speed emergency braking, and lane-departure warning.

Among the options are two $1,700 safety technology packages. One is the Driving Assistance Package with blind-spot monitoring, surround-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, front-rear park assist, and Parking Assistant Plus, which helps you parallel park the car. The other is the Driving Assistance Pro Package that adds traffic-jam assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane-keeping assist with steering assist, and front cross-traffic alert.

BMW offers several other option packages, as well.

The 2023 BMW 840i Convertible starts at $94,400.

Storage for the convertible top when lowered reduces the rear cargo space. That, plus an option package unique to the convertible, are the only notable differences between the 840i Convertible and the 840i Coupe.

2023 BMW M850i xDrive Coupe

The 2023 BMW M850i xDrive Coupe starts at $99,900.

Motivating all four wheels in the M850i is a 523-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. It gallops to 60 mph from a standstill in 3.8 seconds or less, depending on the body style. The estimated combined fuel economy is 20 mpg.

To the 840i standard content, the M850i adds 20-inch alloy wheels, Active Steering, front ventilated seats, M Sport Differential, the Adaptive M Suspension Professional, and Active Roll Stabilization.

The M850i offers a few options not available for the 840i, like a carbon-fiber roof cap, high-performance tires, and so forth.

Active Steering – Increases and decreases steering resistance based on the vehicle speed.

2023 BMW M8 Competition Coupe (Starting at $130,000)

The version of the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 powering the M8s generates 617 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. Not reflected in the nameplate, M8s also have a form of xDrive as standard. However, it’s called M xDrive through which the driver can choose among RWD, AWD, and AWD Sport settings. Combined fuel economy is 17 mpg.

Most of what elevates the M8 Competition over the M850i are upgrades in the drivetrain, brakes, and suspension. M8 Competition models also get a trunk-mounted carbon-fiber spoiler. In fact, other carbon-fiber elements reduce the M8’s weight. In short, the M8 Competition is a much more aggressive package than the M850i.

BMW also put a little more effort into the M8 cabin with some upgraded materials. However, the content and layout are similar to the regular 8 Series.

Adding the destination fee to the 2023 BMW M8 Competition Coupe base price totals $130,995. Financing at 3% for 60 months with no money down works out to about $2,354 per month. See 2023 BMW M8 Competition Coupe models for sale.

Besides the upgraded V8, what separates the Alpina B8 from the M850i Gran Coupe is a higher degree of hand-craftsmanship and upgraded interior materials. The engine not only pumps out more horsepower and torque, but it is hand-built. Inside, you can spec your Alpina B8 to much higher quality saddlery with hand stitching.

Adding the $995 destination fee to the 2023 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe brings the total to $140,895. Financing for 60 months at 3% with no money down works out to about $2,532. See 2023 BMW Alpina B8 xDrive Gran Coupe models for sale.
