For 2023, the BMW X7 SUV gets a mild freshening, with a new powertrain and name for the top-line M60i and an improved interior. Although it offers 3-row seating, the X7’s rearmost seat isn’t where most adults will want to spend long periods, and its cargo space is far from class-leading. On the flip side, the X7 is luxurious to a fault, drives like a large sports sedan, and has enough tech to impress a NASA engineer.
With the 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine, the 2023 BMW X7 xDrive40i is rated by the EPA at 21 mpg city/25 mpg highway/22 mpg combined. With the 4.0-liter V8, the BMW X7 M60i is rated at 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway/18 mpg combined.
Luxury buyers have plenty of options in a crowded field, including the Audi Q7, Lincoln Aviator, Mercedes-Benz GLS, and Lexus GX. The Genesis GV80 and Jeep Grand Wagoneer also are tempting choices.

(starting at $77,850)
The 2023 BMW X7 xDrive40i boosts horsepower this year from a greatly improved 3.0-liter turbocharged engine. At 375 hp, the xDrive40i touts 40 more ponies than last year’s version, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to help with acceleration and fuel economy.
All X7 models come standard with all-wheel drive (AWD), adaptive dampers, and a two-axle adaptive air suspension. The models also get a revised front end, a new digital display on the dash, and a few more luxury perks.
The xDrive40i comes standard with 21-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in all-season run-flat tires. It also features adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, LED fog lights, a rearview camera, and front and rear parking sensors.
BMW’s Comfort Access keyless entry allows the doors to be unlocked, and the vehicle started simply by having the key fob in a purse or pocket. Holding your finger on the door handle for a few seconds causes the doors to lock and the windows and moonroof to close.
Wrapping up the X7 xDrive40i’s exterior feature set are rain-sensing wipers with headlight control, a power rear liftgate, a right-hand mirror tilt-down feature when in reverse, an auto-dimming driver’s side mirror, and a panoramic glass moonroof.
The X7 comes with numerous safety and driver-assist systems. Notable on the list is forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection. The system can also detect and warn of oncoming traffic and monitor the front and rear path when making a right turn, helping avoid bicycles or pedestrians traveling parallel to the vehicle.
Other safety systems include lane-departure warning, a blind-spot monitor, and speed limit info.
Climbing inside the xDrive40i reveals a spacious interior with seats covered in Sensafin synthetic leather upholstery. New multi-contour front seats are now heated and include power side bolsters and driver’s seat memory. The front seats feature a clever Travel and Comfort system built into the back of each seat. The system includes a bracket for supporting accessories like a coat hanger, tablet holder, or folding table. It also contains a USB-C charging port.
Additional interior amenities include 4-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable steering column, multicolor adjustable ambient lighting, a wireless charging pad, and heated front armrests and steering wheel.
One of the most apparent changes to the new X7 interior is the massive glass screen atop the dash. The single-piece curved glass incorporates a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch central display.
The larger screen displays climate, audio, and infotainment information, backed by the latest iDrive 8 software. Driver and passenger can control functions in various ways, including by voice, touchscreen, gesture control, or the iDrive touchpad.
Standard features include navigation with augmented view, BMW ConnectedDrive services (requires subscription), Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 10-speaker audio system.
Connected Package Professional includes real-time traffic updates, on-street parking information, and BMW remote service such as stolen vehicle recovery.
The X7 xDrive40i offers numerous options and packages. Among them are the Dynamic Handling Package, which adds Integral Active Steering (adjust steering assist based on vehicle speed), and Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview, which uses the car’s navigation to anticipate the road ahead and adjust vehicle speed.
Active Driving Assist brings adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane-keeping assist, front cross-traffic detection, and Steering and Traffic Jam Assistants that can automatically steer, brake, and change lanes when driving on certain highways.
Buyers can upgrade to Merino leather, choose from numerous interior colors and wood accents, opt for second-row captain’s chair seating, and even order an illuminated front twin-kidney grille.
Combined, the two M Sport packages bring features such as an M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes, M steering wheel, and M Sport exhaust. Also included in the packages are 21- and 22-inch wheels, extended Shadowline exterior trim, and an anthracite headliner.
Check all the option boxes, and you’ll end up with soft-close automatic doors, rear electric side window sunshades, a panoramic Sky Lounge LED moonroof, heated and cooled cup holders, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, massaging front seats, and a choice between a Harman Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound system.
There’s also an available head-up display, 5-zone automatic climate control, a surround-view monitor, and a parking assistant that can automatically parallel or perpendicular park.
