2023 Chevrolet Silverado HD: Choosing the Right Trim

For jobs that require significant power and capability, the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado HD gets the job done. Available as 2500 (3/4-ton) or 3500 (1-ton), the Silverado HD can’t quite match the Ram HD or Ford Super Duty for towing. But the Silverado HD (with diesel) can tow 36,000 pounds, which is within about 1,000 pounds of its rivals.

The Silverado HD offers rear-wheel drive (RWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD), three cab sizes, two bed lengths, and, on 3500 models, the option of single or dual rear wheels. A pair of lucky sixes supplies power to the Silverado HD. Or, more precisely, you can choose between a 401-horsepower 6.6-liter gasoline V8 with 464 lb-ft of torque or a 445-hp Duramax diesel with a stump-pulling 910 lb-ft of torque. The 3500 also comes in a chassis cab model, perfect for upfitters.

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD WT
(starting at $40,500), 3500 HD WT ($41,700)

The WT is the most basic trim, with only a few frills and a cabin built for getting dirty. Chevrolet offers the WT with a gas or diesel engine, standard or long bed, and in three cabs: Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab.

On the 3500, all but the Crew Cab with the standard bed offer the option of dual rear wheels.

Standard on every Silverado HD is a trailer hitch with a 7-pin connector, a rear vision camera with hitch guidance, integrated bed steps, bumper corner steps, and an Eaton auto-locking rear differential.

The WT includes a heavy-duty suspension, 17-inch steel wheels, black bumpers, 12 fixed cargo tie-downs rated at 500 pounds per corner, black outside vertical trailering mirrors with lower convex mirrors, and a standard locking tailgate.

The WT cabin also is pretty simple, with manual windows, single-zone manual air conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, 40/20/40-split vinyl bench seat, and rubberized flooring. The WT’s instrument cluster includes an analog speedometer and tachometer, oil pressure, engine temperature, volt, and fuel gauges. The cluster also features a monochromatic driver information screen.

Regular Cab models get a 2-speaker stereo; Double Cab and Crew Cab models have six speakers. The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system includes a 7-inch color touchscreen, Bluetooth audio streaming, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Chevy’s HD trucks offer the same advanced driver assists as the half-ton Silverado 1500 — only they are optional, not standard. The WT offers forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, electronic traction and stability control, anti-lock brakes, a tire-pressure monitor, and a rear-seat reminder system that prompts the driver to check the rear seat before leaving the truck.

Sorting through the many options and packages, the WT provides steering-wheel audio controls, cruise control, power windows and door locks (standard on Double Cab and Crew Cab), power-adjustable trailering mirrors, remote keyless entry, a rear defroster, and the EZ Lift tailgate.

Other options include an E85 compatible engine, a chain-driven integrated power take-off built into the 10-speed transmission (Duramax diesel only), dual 220-amp/170-amp alternators, a heavy-duty battery, integrated trailer brake control, a 120-volt box-mounted outlet, and a spray-in bedliner.

A gooseneck/fifth-wheel package adds a bed-mounted hitch platform, bed-mounted 7-pin connector, integrated trailer brake control, and a spray-in bedliner.

Owners can also upgrade to larger alloy wheels and choose from numerous exterior add-ons such as side steps, chrome bumper, and the Multi-Flex 6-way adjustable tailgate.

With the $1,795 destination charge, the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 WT Regular Cab long box costs $42,295. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to about $760. See the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD WT pickups for sale

FAQ

  • What is the best 2023 Chevrolet Silverado HD pickup?

The best trim, in this case, will likely be decided by what you need. If you’re looking for a full-time work truck that will take a beating, the WT is the obvious choice. If seeking a comfortable truck at a fair price, we’d opt for the LT and tack on a few options.

Luxury buyers will be happy with the LTZ, while those who like to show off their success will opt for the High Country.

  • How many miles per gallon does the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado HD pickup get?

The EPA does not rate heavy-duty trucks, but with the 6.6-liter engine, you can expect figures of maybe 15 mpg on the highway. With the diesel, probably close to 20 mpg.

  • Which 2022 Chevrolet Silverado HD pickup offers the most safety?

Neither the government (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has crash-tested the Silverado HD pickup. To be on the safe side, we’d say order as many driver-assist systems as your chosen trim allows.
