2023 Chevrolet Suburban: Choosing the Right Trim

The biggest news for the returning 2023 Chevrolet Suburban is the availability of the General Motors’ self-described autonomous driver-assistance system Super Cruise. According to GM, it’s a hands-free technology for compatible roads. This cutting-edge system can accelerate, brake, and steer the car — even change lanes — without driver input on certain designated roads. Super Cruise is an option on the Suburban’s two highest trims. However, the microchip shortage may delay Super Cruise’s availability.

Otherwise, some new exterior colors round out the changes.

Speaking of trims, Chevrolet separates Suburban models into six grades: LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country. Standard on Z71, 4-wheel drive (4WD) is optional on all other trims.

Two V8s and a turbodiesel inline-6 comprise the engine lineup. The standard power plant is a 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 on all grades but High Country. It and the two other available powerplants use a 10-speed automatic transmission to transfer torque to the wheels.

Optional for the LS, LT, RST, Premier, and High Country is the 277-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel. Standard on the High Country and optional on the Z71, RST, and Premier is a 420-hp 6.2-liter V8. Both the turbodiesel and 6.2-liter V8 generate 460 lb-ft of torque.

Rear-wheel-drive (RWD) models with the 5.3-liter V8 deliver an estimated 17 miles per gallon in combined driving. With the turbodiesel, that number is 24 mpg. It’s 16 mpg with the 6.2-liter V8. When properly equipped, the Suburban can tow up to 8,300 pounds. Providing 145 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seat, it can carry up to 1,759 pounds. It can accommodate up to eight. However, an available front bench-seat option (LS grade only) can bump the headcount to nine. Measure the Suburban against its mechanical twin, the GMC Yukon XL, and competitors like the Jeep Wagoneer, Toyota Sequoia, and Ford Expedition.

In EPA fuel economy, the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban with the 5.3-liter V8 is rated at 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway/17 mpg combined (RWD), or 15 mpg city/19 mpg highway/16 mpg combined (4WD).

The diesel Suburban is more efficient, rated by the EPA at 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway/23 mpg combined (RWD) or 20 mpg city/26 mpg highway/22 mpg combined (4WD).

With the 6.2-liter gasoline V8, the Suburban returns 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway/16 mpg combined (RWD), or 14 mpg city/18 mpg highway/16 mpg combined (4WD).

We like the Suburban for its engine choices, spacious interior, towing prowess, and wide selection of trim levels.

2023 Chevrolet Suburban LS includes:

Proximity keyless entry – If the key fob is on your person, the doors automatically unlock. Push-button start is paired with proximity keyless entry.

Rain-sensing wipers – These engage automatically when the system senses moisture on the windshield. The wiper speed adjusts according to the volume of the rain.

Remote start – When within range, you can start the Suburban from outside the vehicle with the key fob. It’s handy for precooling the vehicle in summer and preheating it in winter.

2023 Chevrolet Suburban LT
(starting at $60,200)

Unless you must have the 6.2-liter V8, the LT represents the best value in the Suburban lineup.

To the LS content, it adds a hands-free power rear liftgate, heated 10-way power-adjustable leather front seats, and a 9-speaker Bose audio system. Also included are a 10.2-inch touchscreen, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a HomeLink transceiver, and wireless phone charging. A 12-inch color programmable driver-information-and-gauge display is standard, as well.

The LT’s list of option packages grows. To gain blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, you must opt for the Luxury Package. It also adds a surround-view camera, rear pedestrian detection, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and heated auto-dimming outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals. It also has a heated steering wheel and power-folding second- and third-row seats.

Adding the destination fee to the LT base price equals $61,995. Financing for 60 months at 3% interest with no money down works out to about $1,114 per month. See 2023 Chevrolet Suburban LT models for sale

2023 Chevrolet Suburban LT includes:

Hands-free power liftgate – With the key fob on your person, stick your foot under the rear bumper. The liftgate automatically opens.

Auto-dimming rearview mirror – Using photosensors, it recognizes bright headlights closing from behind, automatically dimming their reflection.

Smartphone charging – You can charge any Qi-compatible smartphone without using a cable.

2023 Chevrolet Suburban RST
(starting at $63,700)

Mainly an appearance upgrade from the LT, the RST gains you 22-inch black-painted alloy wheels and perforated-leather seating with red stitching. There are a few blacked-out exterior accents, as well.

It retains the LT’s options.

Adding the destination fee to the RST base price totals $65,495. At 3% interest for 60 months, financing with no money down works out to a monthly payment of about $1,177. See 2023 Chevrolet Suburban RST models for sale

2023 Chevrolet Suburban Z71
(starting at $65,700)

2023 Chevrolet Suburban Z71 in slate

This is most off-road worthy of Suburban trims. Not only is it the only Suburban grade with 4WD standard, but Chevy has loaded it up with off-road equipment. For example, skid plates, 20-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, a 2-speed transfer case, and front-rear tow hooks (in red). It also sports a heavy-duty air filter, a unique high-approach-angle front fascia, and black wheel-to-wheel textured steps. Hill-descent control is standard, as well.

The Z71 does lose the RST’s perforated leather seats in favor of standard leather seating.

For $2,995, you may add the Off-Road Capability Package. It gains you an adaptive air suspension, an electric limited-slip differential, and Magnetic Ride Control. The Luxury Package is still available.

Adding the $1,795 destination fee to the Z71 base price brings the total to $67,495. Financing with no money down for 60 months at 3% interest works out to approximately $1,213 per month. See 2023 Chevrolet Suburban Z71 models for sale

2023 Chevrolet Suburban Z71 includes:

Hill-descent control – This is essentially cruise control for low-speed downhill driving.

Four-wheel drive – This is standard for the Z71 grade only. It can automatically transfer torque to the front wheels when the rear wheels are slipping, or the driver can switch to full-time 4WD on the fly.

Skid plate – Covering the front of the Suburban’s undercarriage, this metal sheet protects mechanical components from rocky impacts and other hard surfaces on the trail.

2023 Chevrolet Suburban Premier
(starting at $68,500)

Building on the LT, the Premier adds 20-inch alloy wheels, an auto-dimming driver-side outboard mirror, and chrome exterior elements. Also included are a 10-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system and memory settings (driver seat, outboard mirrors, and power-adjustable steering wheel). Power-folding rear seats, a power-adjustable steering wheel, a power-sliding center console, a haptic-alert driver seat, and perforated-leather seating are standard, too.

You also gain Magnetic Ride Control, which constantly monitors the road surface and can adjust the dampers accordingly in milliseconds.

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert finally join the standard advanced safety technologies.

To add a power panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, surround-view camera, and a head-up display, pick the Premium Package. A digital rearview camera mirror and rear pedestrian detection are also included.

Premier is where Super Cruise appears as an option. This self-driving technology promises to do it all only on compatible roads — even changing lanes on its own. GM says that the driver doesn’t need to hold the steering wheel in such situations. However, Super Cruise does include a camera to ensure the driver is paying attention and watching the road.

Adding the destination fee to the Premier base price brings the total to $70,295. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to about $1,263 per month. See 2023 Chevrolet Suburban Premier models for sale

2023 Chevrolet Suburban High Country
(starting at $75,300)

Topping the grade ladder, the High Country is the most luxurious of Suburban trims. The listed price is for a High Country equipped with the 3.0-liter turbodiesel. Chevy says the 6.2-liter gasoline V8 is standard but adds roughly $1,500 to the bottom line.

To the Premier, High Country adds 22-inch alloy wheels and all the features in the Premier’s Premium Package except adaptive cruise control and the panoramic sunroof.

To get the panoramic sunroof and adaptive cruise control, you must pay for one of the High Country option packages. For example, the Premium Package 2 includes power-retractable running boards, adaptive cruise control, and the panoramic sunroof.

Super Cruise is an option, as well.

Adding the destination fee to the High Country base price totals $77,095. Financing for 60 months at 3% interest with no money down works out to about $1,385. See 2023 Chevrolet Suburban High Country models for sale

2023 Chevrolet Suburban High Country includes:

Surround-view camera – It provides a 360-degree bird’s-eye view around the vehicle. This is particularly valuable when parking.

Digital rearview camera mirror – Using a rear-pointed camera, a rear-view image appears in the rearview mirror. It presents a full display of what is behind the vehicle even if the rear window is blocked.

Head-up display – A projector on the dashboard at the windshield base displays critical driver information on the windshield just below the driver’s line of sight.

  1. Safety features should never require adding non-safety features. There is a reason that Max Trailering Package (RPO NHT) , Rear Seat Media System (UW9), and others are optional. Some owners do not want the stiffer ride that the Trailer package includes, the lower roof that comes with the sunroof, or the look of a entertainment system they will never use just to get features like Pedestrian Alert (UKK), Adaptive Cruise Control (KSG), or Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking (UGN).
